Looking for the perfect dark gray or taupe for your cabinets, walls or exterior? You have come to the right blog! Today we’re exploring the dark side of things with Sherwin William’s most popular dark neutrals. But before we get started, as usual, we need to chat a bit (insert wine here).
Sherwin Williams Greige Color Palette
Depending on your color religion, you may think that gray and taupe are the same (three light strokes with a wet noodle) or completely different colors. On this side of the classic color wheel, they both have similar purposes (being warmer than brown and cooler than beige), but their evolution separates them.
The Best Whole House Paint Colors (2022)
Greige is one of my favorite neutral colors. Sandwiched between gray and beige, it is also more likely to survive different trends because it does not commit to anything completely (referring to gray and beige / trends of the last 20 years). Some stones cater to gray tones, making them look a bit cooler, while others tend towards the warmth of beige, making them look warmer. But no matter which side they lean on, everyone loves shades of green (and rarely a touch of purple).
But while you can find some pretty neutral stones on the lighter side of things (their undertones are dull), you’ll find that as rocks get darker, they pick up more undertones. That means it exists
Like gray, taupe is somewhere between gray and beige and can be slightly warm or cool depending on the particular combination. However, VIOLET is a subtle choice and rarely shines green.
Taupe is just as challenging as gray when it comes to darker options, and the darker taupe you choose, the more mauve and gray you’ll end up with – think twice.
Best Greige Paint Colors
The key to determining whether you need grays or taupes is deciding which undertone – green or purple – best suits your finish! Remember, just because you prefer one undertone over another doesn’t mean your home agrees with you.

Anonymous is STUNNING, although I wonder what his real name is. It comes in hot with the LRV 20 and is a great way to make an impact without diving into the DEEP side of unknown dark territory.
Being a greige, Anonymous has a soft green undertone. If you don’t like green undertones, this might cut you short, but it can give the subtle yet understated finish that this particular undertone calls for.
Perfect Greige Color Review
As for dark taupe, mink (and dark folkstone) is my window. However, depending on the degree of brown in them, it can be argued that they are called warm brown. Both colors have slightly noticeable purple undertones, but remain stable
Fink has an LRV of 21 and is a popular choice for exteriors where a particular stone/brick/roof has a purple undertone – such as Folkstone (LRV 14). In the photo above, it’s very easy to see how the marten can be considered a taupe, not a warm brown.
This next photo shows how quickly a color like maroon or folk stone can warm up with a good amount of southern or western afternoon sun…
When we talk about dark grays, Keystone gray is not the first that comes to mind because of its depth. But it’s on the EDGE and it’s a damn beautiful color, I want you to take a closer look.
Agreeable Gray A No Fail Paint Color
Keystone Gray is a solid medium deep gray. And while that means it has a green tone, the reason it’s so good is that the undertones are so hard to see and not worth mentioning.

I love Urban Bronze, and if it didn’t exist my house would lack a little oomph, but Sherwin Williams wouldn’t have great dark grays to explore! Urbane Bronze has the most wicked passive warmth and green undertones, as seen on these stair railings…
Urbane Bronze is also a great choice for kitchen cabinets, islands and bathroom sinks and walls!
The 9 Best Living Room Paint Colors For 2022
Spalding Gray is another gorgeous dress that will look warmer when paired with the aforementioned mink. Spalding Gray is similar to a darker version of the ever-popular and aptly named popular gray (LRV 61), but with its LRV 22, it has more visual weight.
Because I want to show you real homes and only refer to my Color Consulting Online client photos, I don’t have great examples of this beautiful color (some photos are too low quality to use). Thanks to those who submitted their photos!
What about Kylie Garrett Gray and Chateau Brown, the colors just below Spaulding Gray on the color bar, aren’t they also great taupes?
‘Oh, you’re good… but that’s not good (wink)! While Garrett Gray has a great take on taupe when it comes to Chateau Brown, well, the name says it all.
Home Color Palette
Seriously, don’t let Warm Stone’s awesome Pinterest page throw you off track – if you’re looking for warmer than average grays, this is it!
Whether a warm stone looks gray on Pinterest or the Sherwin William site – I won’t deny it. However, in real life this gray warmth has a nice hint of brown and a small hint of green (some people don’t notice). If the usual gray and taupe colors are too gray for you, this might be just the ticket.
For the Sherwin William’s Light palette, it should be a nice gray. However, on the extreme end of things, you’ll often see Sherwin Williams Urban Bronze on everything from front and exterior doors to walls and cabinets!

Sticks & Stones is TAUPE because it has a light purple undertone (LRV 31). It has a similar look to Keystone Gray, but is a bit lighter and softer and looks a bit more dusty.
Redend Point, Sherwin Williams Color of the Year 2023, is a vibrant lacquer color. This side has a stronger undertone than other neutrals.
Mega Greige is a soft medium deep gray with MINIMAL LEADING and LRV 37. Check the color here
Paint Colour Review: Sherwin Williams Keystone Gray Sw 7504
Fan Brindle is a beautiful gray color with soft green undertones, making it a popular choice for exterior cladding, cupboards, whole rooms and walls (LRV 36). Color review here
Elephant Ear is a personal favorite when you’re looking for a warm brown/taupe color with a muted purple undertone. With its LRV 28, it is an excellent choice for a wide range of surfaces.
Felt wool with its LRV 28 can hardly have a very good depth. But it is a great gray color with a beautiful green undertone.
