This article was written to help you narrow down the perfect color choice for your home – whether it’s a perfect gray, a light gray, or a neutral gray family. Gray color can be warm or cool, and how it looks on a wall or cabinet will change depending on the amount of light the room receives. Sherwin Williams Passive is a popular gray paint color. It is cool toned and has subtle blue tones so it has a very calming and relaxing vibe and looks great in a variety of rooms and settings.
Today I am reviewing Sherwin Williams Passive as part of my paint color review series. I love researching paint colors, reviewing them and sharing all the details with you! If you have a color you’d like me to review, please let me know in the comments.
Passive gray is, but definitely not as popular as other gray paint colors like cool gray, world class gray and nice gray. It’s such a pretty color and I think I should use it more often! In this review, I’ll share all the details about Inertia and why I think it’s the perfect color for you.
Beautiful Cabinet Paint Colors For Kitchens And Baths
LRV or Light Reflectance Value is the amount of light that a color reflects or absorbs. The higher the LRV number, the lighter the paint color. I always look at LVR paint numbers when deciding if a paint color is right for a project in my home. Here is a really useful article if you want to know more about LRV.
So which color is passive? One of the most frequently asked questions! Simply put, it is a gray color with cool undertones. It picks up shades of other colors around it and reflects them, making it appear blue in some areas and white in others. If there is enough natural light, even passive gray can pass passively.
Due to its cool and icy tones, if you want a warm and cozy feeling in your home, it is best to stay away from this paint color as it can have the opposite effect. Colors with blue tones are more comfortable and airy, while warm tones are more traditional, cozy and brown.
This does not mean that you should never mix cool or warm colors. In fact, I highly recommend mixing warm and cool colors in your furniture, paint colors, window treatments, etc. This gives you a much more interesting and designed room than a monotonous room that can be flat and boring. As an interior designer, I am always looking for ways to combine unique colors and patterns for an interesting look. Not true, over and over again.
Sherwin Williams Pewter Green: Paint Guide
As I said before, passive colors and shades are taken from colors such as upholstery, furniture and carpet lighting. In a certain light it definitely shows blue tones. Sometimes you can even see a purple flash. I say this in every paint review post, but before you test your paint color, you should test it first by taking a sample on the wall. You don’t want to buy a whole gallon and start painting only to find that there is too much blue for your liking. We’ve all done it before, excitedly running to buy the gallon, and the first roll of paint on the wall makes us suddenly question everything. Don’t do it, take a litter sample first! You’ll be glad you did.
Bedrooms and bathrooms are natural areas where we go to relax and recharge, so using a calming color on the walls makes sense! Kindergartens are another great place to use passives to promote sleep π
Kitchens and cabinets are another good idea for passive use. If your kitchen cabinets are a dark neutral wood (not cherry), Passive is a great wall color. If you want gray in your kitchen cabinets, consider going passive. Be sure to give your walls a matching color.
Our kitchen cabinets in our first home were a cool gray (see photo below) and I loved the color! They looked very modern and clean and needed less maintenance than all the white cabinets. Our cabinets are pre-finished by Home Depot, so I don’t know the exact paint color, but the color is very similar to passive. Check out our kitchen remodel here.
Are Gray Paint Colours Still Trendy (cabinets, Walls & Exteriors)?
Living rooms and dining rooms look great with passive color. It usually looks best if your room has a lot of natural light. If your living room is windowless and feels dark, passive might not be the best gray color option for you. You can consider accessible beige instead.
Shiplap is a popular feature (read this post to learn all about how to install shiplap) in the home as an accent wall, around a fireplace or in mudrooms, even in the bathroom! You can definitely draw the passive shiplap.
Color gloss is an important feature when choosing paint colors that is often overlooked. You can use glitter to your advantage for a different look. Although the color is the same, an eggshell painted wall and a semi-gloss painted wall will be different.
When designing a space, I sometimes have clients paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, but with a flat ceiling finish.
