Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore are the two largest paint retailers in the United States. When you’re looking for paint, you may start to wonder what the difference is between the two. Both have dozens of products and a dizzying number of colors.
We spoke to experts from five paint companies to get their opinions on both brands. In general, everyone says that they both have good product lines backed by large research and development budgets. But there are times when they prefer one over the other.
The pros also explain what colors to use if you do it yourself or hire a professional, the best colors for cabinets, and more.
Color Matching Between Paint Brands

When we asked interior designers and color experts for paint color recommendations for living rooms, they offered a mix of both companies, but generally suggested more options from Benjamin Moore.
“Different brands have different color strengths,” says color consultant Amy Wax. “If I preferred earthy grays, creams and navy, I would choose Sherwin-Williams. With Benjamin Moore, sometimes the colors are a little brighter, the colors are a little more energetic,” he said. “So for me it’s a question of what I want to achieve, which paint company I’m going to use.”
“I usually tell people to pick whatever color they want,” says Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting. Nine times out of 10, he said, both companies can match it.
The Best Neutral Wall Paint Colors That Go With Wood Trim Molding
However, she explains that Benjamin Moore’s Aura line seems a little more complicated to achieve. Both Matt Kunz, president of Five Star Painting, and Michael Camper of M&M Precision Painting say Sherwin-Williams has superior color mixing and matching software.
Camper says that despite the brand’s claim that you only need one coat, you should apply a second coat and prime the walls first. “Apply two coats and you are guaranteed to get the highest quality finish,” he says.
“Many people like to use Regal Select or Aura by Benjamin Moore, especially if they are in an area that gets a lot of sun,” says Kunz.
Nolan mentioned Florida Climate Resilience by Sherwin-Williams. When the sun heats the water molecules between the paint and the wood, they try to evaporate through the paint. “They basically ripped the paint off and that’s why we have a lot of peeling here,” he said. It dries quickly and resists heat and humidity well.

Kunz and Camper say that when their painting team wants a particular brand and type of paint, it’s because they know how to get the best results from it.
“What we found was some teams were very used to using one type of paint and stuck with it because they knew it without thinking about it,” Kunz said. “They know the coverage level. They know the right no-roller to use—whatever they need for a particular type of paint.”
Campers like to use certain products over and over again for the same reasons. “I am familiar with its characteristics, the way it flows, how dry the weather is, it is more suitable for running,” he said.
Nearly everyone we spoke to also recommended using higher quality, more expensive paint. With cheaper paint, “if you hire a professional painter and want the job done well, they will usually use more product to cover it, so it will cost more,” says Camper. said

Materials, including paint, account for about 10% of the total cost, so it makes sense to save on labor whenever possible, he said.
If you paint yourself, the price calculation will be slightly different compared to a professional. The highest cost is the product.
Although more expensive, self-leveling paints like Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin-Williams Smaragd Urethane (for trim) can be a little more forgiving of wall blemishes and brush strokes.
If you want a paint that’s easy to touch up, Camper suggests Benjamin Moore. With Sherwin-Williams, “the more layers you apply, the lighter it gets,” he says. Although sheen (bright spots on the wall that look like different layers of paint) tends to show up with higher-gloss paint compared to plain or flat paint, Camper says Benjamin Moore’s satin seems to be easier to touch up than Sherwin-Williams’ satin line.

Painting your own cabinets is a painstaking process. Cabinets are also susceptible to doors, grease, smoke, and other hazards.
Water-based alkyd paints cover and dry more strongly than oil-based paints, but are easier to clean and less harmful than latex paints.

Availability: Searching 11 fairly far-flung zip codes from Alaska to Maine, we found Benjamin Moore in several locations. However, they often have a limited selection and only offer the budget-friendly Ben brand line.

Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting, says he likes supporting local businesses and prefers Benjamin Moore. But Michael Camper, owner of M&M Precision Painting, said his company’s private stores have inconsistent hours like Sherwin-Williams locations, which are always open on weekends, for example.
Customer Service: The paint companies we spoke with were split on customer service between Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams. It seems like this really depends on the individual store manager and employee.
Color: “I think Benjamin Moore offers better color,” says Camper. “And if you’re going for something bright, like deep red or royal blue or something, Benny Moore would probably be a better choice.”

Our Calming Whole House Paint Color Scheme
With thousands of colors to choose from, just one (or an entire palette) can be overwhelming. Both Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have ways to help you find the right one.
Color Chips: Once you have selected a particular color group or colors, you should start comparing different colors. “Color chips are a great way to reduce that process,” says Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams director of color marketing. It’s hard to know whether a color is warm or cool unless you have something to compare it to.
Website tools: Laura Bruqi of Brush Rite Painting says both companies have “awesome, friendly websites where our customers can choose their colors.” Both have programs that let you imagine how your room would look if it were painted a new color, although of course it won’t be exactly the same.
Benjamin Moore Personal Color Viewer lets you upload your own photos and paint the cabinets, walls, and trim any color you want. This tool is easy to use and displays details well under layers of digital paint. You must register with your email to use it.

Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap Viewer is very similar. You can use your own photos or photos from the company. The results are a little worse than what you get with Benjamin Moore, but you don’t need to sign up.
Sherwin-Williams has another useful tool, the Snap It button, which creates a color palette from any photo you want and matches the brand colors. It’s not perfect, but it’s a starting point.
Sample Jars: If you’re stuck between a few colors, you can buy small amounts of colors from both companies and try them out. Greg Agosta, owner of Level 5 Fine Finishing, recommends painting poster board rather than walls. If you apply it to a wall, it may require additional preparation and coating to cover it when you are ready to paint the final color. Additionally, this sample is intended only for
