One of the best ways to brighten up your room without spending a lot of money is by painting numbers. Not only are these pieces affordable, but… Trying to find the best colors to match honey stick and cabinets can be a difficult task. You really need to think about undertones and both complementary and contrasting colors on the color wheel. It seems like a lot, right?! But today I did all the heavy lifting and found you 21 great options that will pair perfectly with any honey oak you have around the house.
Paint can be the best (and cheapest) way to update your home. You can do amazing things with color and it’s the best way to get a makeover!
Sherwin Williams Shoji White: The Off White Color You’ve Been Looking For!
If you have a kitchen with honeycomb cabinets and you want to update them, it can be very expensive! If you have an entire house with honey oak siding, that may be a choice to replace. You could always paint or trim the cabinets, but that would be a lot of work.
If painting the cabinets and decor isn’t something you want to tackle right now, your best bet is to embrace the honeycomb and let it work. For that you need a good wall color.
Well, the simple answer to that is probably not. Honeycomb had its heyday in the 80s and 90s and while there are many things that have made the rounds and come back into style, that color of wood will probably never be one of them.
The reason it is no longer in style is the color of the undertone it has. They are very yellow and orange and since we came into the 21st century we have done pretty much everything to get rid of the orange wood tone.

I still have flashbacks to my first kitchen in my first house and the orange undertone the wood had. Orange doesn’t look good with so much wood in the great room.
You have two choices, you can choose colors that have the same type of undertone that resemble the honey oak. Or you can choose contrasting colors in the color wheel that complement and destroy the orange look.
The color wheel is an arrangement of all the colors in the spectrum according to their relationships, and it is useful for creating harmonious color schemes. Complementary colors enhance each other’s intensity when placed next to each other. Therefore, they are often used to create striking images with high contrast. Source: Maryville University
So if you look at the color wheel and you want to reduce the appearance of a certain color, you should choose a color that is opposite to the one on the wheel. If you want to mix this color, choose something on the wheel that is nearby.
Antique Paint Colors For Historic Houses
Let me give you an example. I have very dark circles under my eyes, they are purple even on my best days. So when I do my makeup, I use a color corrector in an orange/peach shade and then put concealer on top.
The color corrector softens the purple in my skin so when I apply concealer I have a consistent color with the rest of my face. If I didn’t do this, no amount of concealer would hide all the purple in my under eyes.
The best way to judge if a color is right for you is to stick a color swatch on the wall and look at it for a few days. See it in a different light and decide if you really like it.
You can do that by taking a sample from the paint store and sticking it on the walls with a brush, but then you have a can that you can’t do anything with. These samples are used with poor quality paint and are not intended to be used permanently on your walls.
Paint Colors That Go With Honey Oak Trim
I recommend going with Samplize. They are a company that will send you a 12X12 peel and stick swatch with a paint color that you can stick to the wall. When you’re done, just peel it off and throw it away.
Okay, so now we understand that you need to choose a color that has similar tones or contrasting tones. The similar tones will blend and coordinate the orange/yellow undertones, while the contrasting tones will tone down the orange and yellow undertones.
Let’s start with Sherwin Williams, my favorite paint manufacturer. These are colors with similar undertones that go very well with any type of honey oak.
Pleasant gray is my favorite when painting a honeycomb house or cabinets. I am a real estate agent and I helped a client prepare her house for sale. The walls were very bright colors that should be toned so that more buyers would be interested.
Fascinating Paint Colors That Go With Honey Oak Trim For A Simple Look
We went for Agreeable Gray and it was the perfect color. The painter himself told me that Agreeable Gray was not only the most requested color he used, but in his opinion was the best color to match the honey oak they had in the trim, balustrade, kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
Oyster Bay is a neutral green color with a hint of gray in it. This makes it a neutral color and goes very well with honey oak. Oyster Bay is in the same color family as Sea Salt, one of the most popular teal that Sherwin Williams has.
Repose Gray would probably be my second choice to pair with honey oak after Agreeable Grey. It’s very similar to AG, but a little more on the cool side. Having that coolness really helps to tone down the orange feeling in the honey oak.
Comfort Gray is also closely related to the ever popular Sea Salt. It is slightly darker with more color depth. It is a teal color, but it has a hint of gray that prevents it from becoming too cold and makes it neutral.
The Best White Paint Colors From Sherwin Williams
If youare looking for a color that is mid-tone and not quite neutral, this is a great choice!
This is a very light, beautiful brown color with slight yellow undertones. These undertones make it a perfect match for honey oak.
Yes, beige is no longer popular, gray is king. But believe it or not, beige has made a comeback, but in a different form.
The beige of the 90s is gone and not coming back. What is popular now is light and bright and Canvas Tan is a perfect match for a 64 LRV.
Memory Color Collection
Not to be confused with Oyster Bay, Oyster Bar is a beautiful creamy color that blends beautifully with the notes of honey oak.
Oyster Bar is between off-white and light beige. In a room with a lot of natural light it is more washed out, but in a room with less light you really get the full depth of this color.
Kilim Beige is more mid-tone, so it won’t be as light and bright as Canvas Tan. But as you can see in this photo, it goes so well with Honey Oak that I would be remiss if I did not use this amazing color!
Loggia is what I would call a taupe. It is a medium-tone beige color with a good dose of grey
