Hey guys! Thank you all for the endless love in our backyard renovation. The reception has been overwhelming and we are really enjoying our new space…well, we were before this rogue and highly disrespectful heat wave hit our area and it got over 106 for weeks. You will become unbearable there. Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to pass so we can spend more time outside again. As hot as it’s been lately, we’re starting to feel the heat even before the outdoor space is complete during one of the biggest projects of the entire renovation: painting the deck. Luckily I was able to do this before the real burn got here. Today I am sharing the process of how I took up this project.
The biggest goal I wanted for our outdoor space was to make it feel like an extension of our home’s interior. I really wanted to blur the lines between interior and exterior, and I knew that coloring the lid would be a big factor in the end result. As beautiful as natural redwood is, I really didn’t want it to look or feel like a regular wood deck. I love the warmth of the wood floor color in our home and I was hoping to replicate it outside.
Deck Staining In Collegeville
Since we used pine wood, we had to wait several months after building it before applying any stain or protective coating to it. This allows the wood and oils to dry thoroughly, so it takes the stain better and gives a great color. The building was completed in February and we let it dry for 5 months before I painted it in July. If you’re working with woods like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long (if at all) before staining. After creating a game plan to execute the project, I placed a load order from Sherwin-Williams for stain and materials.
I used a set of brushes, a roller, a metal base, a spray pump, and Sherwin-Williams Superdeck Cleaner and Stain to complete the project.
As with all painting projects, a great finish starts with a clean and thoroughly treated surface. I started by cleaning and sweeping everything off the deck. Then I massaged properly. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formulation is specially formulated for use on new or uncoated cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated wood.
I had a little help with this part of the project because you have to make sure you don’t let the product dry on the wood when applying it. Naomi and I worked in small sections, watering the area and applying Superdeck Revive with a pump.
Restoring Weathered Outdoor Furniture And Restaining The Deck
After applying, she used a poly-bristled brush to scrub the area. After that, let it stand for about 10 minutes and rinse with a high-pressure hose.
Once we caught fire, things moved very quickly. Once the entire deck is clean, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the plant looked fresh, renewed and revitalized…like it was brand new again!
After the deck was washed and ready for staining, I did one more with a brush and taped the side of the house where the deck protects the exterior paint.
Now it was time to paint. I chose Superdeck Exterior Waterborne in Semi Solid Color Stain. When choosing a cover stain, you should consider maintenance and how often it may need to be repainted. A good rule of thumb is that the darker or more opaque the transparency, the lower the maintenance. Bright clothes and semi-transparent stains require more frequent maintenance and re-treatment, allowing semi-hard or hard stains to last longer before reapplying. Superdeck is great because you can apply it to wet wood as well.
Stain Color Harbor Mist
Superdeck stains come in a variety of colors and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a deep rich brown and this color was perfect when I tested the color swatch a few months ago. I’ll just look at the small area once more
Now listen guys…your daughter was scared to do her first brush stroke. Like super scary. We saved up for a long time to build the deck and the last thing I wanted to do was destroy it. This was a project that really challenged me to believe in my vision and trust the process. I started by rolling the stain with a small siesta roller, then used a 6 inch deck brush to gently brush over it to smooth it out. Always apply in the direction of the grain.
There was a bit of a learning curve when working with the stain as it was different from other stains used before. You apply it like you would paint and let it sit on the wood for a few minutes then roll/brush the product on without removing the color. It took a while to get the bearings but once I did it was smooth sailing. I was also working against the heat, so I had to move pretty quickly. After the first day, I realized I wanted to apply the stain with just one brush, so I pulled out my other workhorse brushes (Purdy’s are my favorite!) and used them throughout the project.
Next time I get a crazy idea to repaint the deck, save me from myself! Let me tell you, it took forever!!! I had no idea how big the cover was until I had to stain it. Board to hand board. It’s huge and took a lot longer than I expected due to its size. I was able to work on it for a short time in the early morning and then in the evening
