Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore are two of the largest paint stores in the United States. If you’re in the market for paint, you’re probably starting to wonder about the difference between the two. Both have dozens of products and a huge selection of colors.
We talked to experts from five paint companies to get an idea of the two designs. Above all, they say they both have several good product lines backed by large research and development budgets. But there are a few situations where one may be better than the other.
The guide also tells you what paint to use when you do it yourself or hire a professional, the best paint for cabinets and much more.

When we asked interior designers and colorists for recommendations on living room paint colors, they offered a mix of both companies, but generally offered more options than Benjamin Moore.
“Different types have different strengths when it comes to color,” says color consultant Amy Wax. “If I’m going to use a lot of clay gray, beige and light blue, I look a lot at Sherwin-Williams. With Benjamin Moore, sometimes they have bright, bright colors, more colors that reinforce,” he said. regarding.”
“I often tell people to pick the color they want,” said Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting. He says that nine times out of ten the companies get along with each other.

However, he explained that Benjamin Moore’s Aura line seems more difficult to get right. Five Star Painting CEO Matt Kunz and M&M Precision Painting’s Michael Camper said Sherwin-Williams has excellent color software and mixers.
While Camper doesn’t say the sign only needs one coat, you should do a second coat and prime the walls first, Camper said. “Apply two coats and ensure the highest quality,” he says.
“There are a lot of people who want to use Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select or Aura, especially if they’re in high, sunny areas,” Kunz said.
Nolan noted Sherwin-Williams’ durability in Florida’s climate. When the sun heats the water molecules between the paint and the wood, they try to come out through the paint. “They remove the paint right away, and that’s why we get so many shells here,” he said. The elastic dries quickly and is resistant to heat and humidity.

Kunz and Camper say that if your painting team specializes in a particular brand and type of paint, it’s because they know how to get the best results.
“Some teams get very used to using one type of goal and they lean towards it and lean towards it because they know it without thinking about it,” Kunz said. “They know the coverage level. They know the right roller to use—whatever they need for that type of paint.”
Camper likes to use certain products over and over again for the same reason. “I looked into its properties, how it moves, what the drying time is, whether it’s suitable for running,” he said.
Almost everyone we talked to suggested high quality, expensive paint. Cheaper paint: “If you hire a professional painter and you want to do a good job, usually they use more products to put on the coat, so it costs them more work,” Camper said.

The material in the paint makes up 10% of the total cost, so it makes sense to save labor if possible.”
If you paint yourself, the cost calculation is a little different than what is done by professionals. The main price will be the product.
Although more expensive, a replacement paint such as Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane (repairable) can be a little more forgiving of wall and brush imperfections.
If you want paint that’s easy to touch up, Camper recommends Benjamin Moore. “The more layers you apply, the shinier it gets,” she says at Sherwin-Williams. Although flashing (spots of light on the wall that look like a different paint) usually occurs with gloss paint compared to matte or flat paints, Camper said Benjamin Moore satin appears easier to the touch than Sherwin-Williams’ satin line.

Painting cabinets is a difficult task. The cabinet also suffers from oil, steam and other hazards.
Water-based alkyd paints dry like oil-based paints, but are easier to clean and less dangerous than latex paints.

Finding: While searching for zip code 11, a long way from Alaska to Maine, we found Benjamin Moore in many places. However, they often had limited options and only offered the brand’s budget-friendly Ben line.
Our Favorite Paint Colors
Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting, said he likes to support local businesses and likes Benjamin Moore. But Michael Camper, owner of M&M Precision Painting, said the company’s privately held stores can have irregular hours, like Sherwin-Williams locations, which are always open on weekends, for example.
Customer Service: The painting companies we spoke with were split between Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams for customer service. It seems to be heavily dependent on individual store managers and employees.
Colors: “I think Benjamin Moore offers better colors,” Camper said. “And if you’re going for something vibrant, like a deep red or dark blue, Benny Moore would probably be the best choice.”

Choosing one (or the entire palette) from thousands of colors can be overwhelming. Both Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have ways to help you find the right one.
Color pieces: Once you have chosen a color family or a certain shade, you should start comparing different colors. “Colorful materials are the best way to slow down the process,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. It’s hard to tell if a color is warm or cool if you don’t have something to compare it to.
Website tools: Laura Bruqi of Brush Rite Painting said both companies have “great user-friendly websites that we can get customers to actually go to and get their paint.” Both have programs that allow you to imagine what your room will look like with the new color painted, but apparently it won’t look like much.
With Benjamin Moore’s personal color palette, you can enter your image and “paint” the cabinets, walls and interior with the color of your choice. The tool is easy to use and shows the details well under the digital paint layer. You must register your email address to use it.

Sherwin-Williams’ ColorSnap Visualizer is very similar. You can use your own image or your company image. The results are more boring than Benjamin Moore, but you don’t need to register.
Another useful tool from Sherwin-Williams is the Snap It Button, which creates a color palette for any image you want that matches the brand’s paint colors. It’s not perfect, but it gives you a starting point.
Sample bottles: If you’re stuck on a few colors, you can buy a small amount of paint from both companies and try them out. Greg Agosta, owner of Level 5 Fine Finishes, recommends painting posters instead of walls. If you are placing these on walls, additional preparation and coatings may be necessary to cover them when you are ready to paint them with your final color. Also, these samples are for testing purposes only, and their lifespan is not the same as the actual product.
Color To Go from Sherwin-Williams is about $10 per liter (32 oz). We have seen some stock issues with the samples.
