As you know, we are in the middle of the construction phase and trying to decide on the exterior color. It’s a very difficult decision, but we have to fix it. Since most houses will be painted white, it all depends on what shade of white we choose!
Before you buy paint by the gallon, it’s important to try out a few different types of paint first. You can do this the old fashioned way which is time consuming and messy. Or you can use Samplize to order large samples of paints and pens of the right color.
Despite its name, Sherwin Williams Pure White is not pure white. It has a bit of spiciness, but not so much that it looks cute. This is probably the lightest white color I will ever use on a house.
Sherwin Williams Oyster White is a very warm white. You can call it a very gray color. If you plan to use wood accents outdoors, this is a great addition.

Update: We recently completed a renovation and decided to use a white dove outside. We were very happy with the result. In my opinion this would be a good color for white exterior paint.

We were fans of this color when we first saw it on the house, but as with all home building decisions, we did our research to make sure it was the right color. The White Duck’s LRV is 74. But you may be wondering what that value means. LRV allows us to determine how light or dark a color is. LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value and is measured on a scale from 0 to 100, where 0 means true black and 100 means white. At a value of 74, the white duck is on the light side of the light spectrum.
White Duck has subtle yellow undertones but is a neutral color overall. It also has gray undertones that soften the yellow. So you end up with a bright white color with blue accents. Greige is a color between gray and beige.

As I mentioned above, Sherwin Williams White Duck competed with our exterior colors from the start. However, to be sure that it is the right type, we have selected and compared two other, very similar types. It was difficult to narrow down the choices with so many different white paint colors to choose from. After much research, we chose Natural Choice and Oyster White, both from Sherwin Williams.
As you can see, they are all white and warm on the underside. But let’s take a closer look at everything.
Natural Selection has an LRV of 73, meaning it has a darker shade than the White Duck, which has an LRV of 74. It also has a stronger yellow color than the White Duck.
Oyster White has an LRV of 72, making it the lightest of the three colors we compared. In terms of halftones, it is very similar to White Duck with yellow and gray undertones. But it also has green leaves.
Tips And Tricks For Choosing Exterior Trim Colors {color Palette Monday}
When trying to choose a color, it’s always a good idea to test the colors before spending money on a large sheet of paper. The worst thing you can do is buy two or three 5-gallon buckets, start painting your house, and then think it’s the wrong color.
To avoid this problem, we tested each of the following: White Duck, Natural Choice, and Oyster White. Then we found a spot in front of the house and painted it in all colors. Remember that when testing samples you need to apply two coats, as one coat is not enough to get the true color of the paint.

We felt like a natural choice but very creamy. Oyster White was close behind, but seeing her next to White Duck confirmed our initial beliefs that White Duck was the right color for our home’s facade. So we settled on Sherwin Williams White Duck.
