Hello friends! Thank you all so much for the outpouring of love for our yard. The response has been overwhelming and we love our new location…we already had temperatures over 106 for weeks before this brutal and disrespectful heat wave hit our area. It is unbearable there. Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to pass so I can spend more time with it. Because it’s been so hot lately, we’re starting to feel the heat even before one of Mac’s biggest projects is finished: painting the deck. Luckily, I was able to finish here before the baked goods arrived. Today I will share the process of how to take this project.

The biggest goal for our open space was to make it feel like an extension of our interior. I really wanted to blur the dark and light lines and knew that painting the deck would be a big factor in helping that result. As beautiful as natural redwood is, I don’t want it to look or feel like a regular hardwood floor. I love the warmth of the hardwood floor color inside the house and hope to reflect that outside as well.

Since we used redwood, we had to wait a few months after building it. It allows wood and oils to dry better, so it absorbs stains better and gives better color. Construction was completed in February and we let it dry for 5 months before painting in July. If you’re working with wood like pine or Douglas fir, you don’t need to wait (if at all) before applying the stain. After coming up with a game plan for how to tackle the project, I ordered Sherwin-Williams stains and materials from outside.

To complete the project I used brushes, a roller, a metal plate, a spray pump, Sherwin-Williams Supertech cleaner and a stain.

As with any painting project, great results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I cleaned and scrubbed everything on the deck. Then, I gave it a good scrub. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is specifically designed for use on fresh or untreated cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated wood.

I had a little help with this part of the project because I had to keep the product from drying on the wood during application. Naomi and I scrubbed the area in small sections and applied SuperDeck Revive with a pump sprayer.

After applying, she cleaned with a poly brush. Then we let it sit for about 10 minutes and wash it off with a high pressure hose.

After realizing this, things moved very quickly. After cleaning the entire floor, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the tree was fresh, new and rejuvenated….like new again!

After the deck was washed and painted, I went one more time with the mop and found the deck next to the house to protect the exterior paint.

Now is the time to be spotted. I chose the Super Tech Outdoor Water formula in a semi-solid tint. When choosing a deck stain, you should consider maintenance and how often it will need to be done. Darker or darker, transparency, less maintenance. Clear coatings and dull stains require frequent maintenance and reapplication. SuperDeck is great because you can use it even on wet wood.

The SuperDeck stain comes in several color options and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I want a deep rich tan and this color was perfect when I tested the color light a few months ago. I saw a small part again

Now listen up guys…your girl is afraid of the first clean blow. Like fear. We saved so much time building the deck that I finally wanted to tear it down. It made me believe in my vision and believe in the process. I started rolling the stain with a small roller and then gently scrubbed it with a 6 inch deck brush. Always use in the direction of the grain.

There was a learning curve when working with the stain because it was unlike any other stain I had used before. Apply it before painting, allow the product to sit on the wood for a few minutes, then apply/remove the paint. It took me a while to get the bearings, but once I did. I was working against the heat, so I had to move very quickly. After the first day, I realized that I wanted to apply the stain with a brush, so I pulled out my other craft brushes (Purties are my favorite!) and used them throughout the project.

Next time I have a crazy idea to re-roll the deck, please save me from myself! When you say it takes forever!!! I don’t know the size of the site. Manual panel. It was huge and took longer than I expected due to its size. Also, I can only work in the mornings and evenings when the temperature outside is below 90 degrees. I recommend doing your deck painting project in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold…just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. Don’t even get me started on cleaning between each one. Alone. Board.

It’s been a few days, but I finally got the first coat done. I wanted to take my time to get good results. Slowly I saw the scene coming together.

The great thing about Superdeck stain in a water-based formula is that it dries quickly and allows for reapplication. After 4 hours, you can apply an additional coat using two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of the project, this product will allow you to complete it in one day! After the second coat is done, I let it all dry overnight before transferring it to the deck.

After about 48 hours I did a water test and was amazed at how the stain held up to moisture and that the water rose and rolled right away.

I think a lot of people were surprised when I said we were going to stain the deck, because I’ve used redwood in construction, and most of the time people leave redwood decks in their natural state. It is an excellent quality wood with all types of decay and natural/elemental resistant qualities. If left untreated or stained, it will turn warm gray over time. Granted, it was pretty cool, but I knew I was going to find it when I first built it. I am very happy with the end result. It looks very nice and makes the place feel like a resort.

Paint Colors By Collection

If you are considering a deck painting project, I definitely recommend Sherwin-Williams Super Tech products. They also come with an oil-based formula, and I’ll try that next time I’m decked out. I’m one of those weirdos who likes to work with oil-based products because it gives you a little more control during application. It dries slower than water-based stains, (which can be a negative for many), but gives you a little more wiggle room if you want to take your time and get the application right.

You can find lots of information on how to tackle deck stains and other paint and stain projects.
