Plastic modeling began in the 60s. Testor products are readily available and may currently be the only choice for paints, solvents and cement. Most of my modeling experience has been with Testors enamels and products. I have tried several acrylic paints and although they are easier to clean, I find the finish undesirable for me. This product is essential for thinning airbrush paint and for cleaning brush parts. Can be used to restore the dryness of some old Testor enamel paint bottles. Recommended for users of enamel paints.
Aztek Airbrush Acrylic Thinner
This thinner is great for my enamel paints. If not for the thinner, it would be very difficult for me to use this paint. It arrived quickly and was very well packaged. In general, I am satisfied with the product.
When used with Model Master Flash Glaze, it gives very good results. Mixes well, Airjawn sprays very well and dries quickly. Can be used with regular Testors bottle icing. Will probably be used with other glazes as well. Recommended.

There, I was watching a YouTube video one sleepless night and found a topic that caught my attention – thinning my own acrylic. For years I have used isopropyl alcohol (99%), which you can find cheaply at the pharmacy, but this requires serious ventilation because alcohol vapors are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream when inhaled (not good). I’ve had really great results using alcohol as an acrylic thinner on Tamiya, Gunze Sangyo (Aqueous/Mr.Hobby), Vallejo, Italeri and Akan (don’t try this with Testors Acryl, it took a while to clean it up). from my airbrush). Drinking was fine when I was single, but drinking today would have elicited a less-than-polite reaction from my spouse.

I have discussed this with some knowledgeable people who dilute acrylic with water (or windshield washer fluid). The few times I’ve tried water has been enough to keep me on my way to alcohol (sounds like W.C. Fields, right?). I used Tamiya Acrylic Thinner which has worked great so far (with the exception of Testor Acrylic) but between cost and availability this has become an issue. That’s when I saw this YouTube video from Genesis Models in the UK. He recommends an interesting blend worth trying.
In the video, the gentleman recommends 33% alcohol to 67% distilled water. Distilled water does not contain contaminants/additives found in tap or well water. I use 99.9% isopropyl alcohol because lower strength alcohols are not as effective (according to the people who taught me the alcohol approach years ago) and this is also recommended in the video. The third ingredient is a few drops of acrylic flow improver to relieve the surface tension of the liquid (you may have heard of using a drop of dishwashing detergent for the same purpose). The final ingredient is Acrylic Liquid Retarder, which slows down the drying time of acrylic and keeps your paint in liquid form when it hits the model rather than drying at the tip of the nozzle or in the air entering the model. .
I made a mixture of water and alcohol using the proportions above and added about 10 ml flow improver and 10 ml liquid retarder to the test batch. For the last test build, I used Tamiya, Italeri (Vallejo), Gunze Sangyo Aqueous (Mr. Hobby) and Akan acrylic thinned with this mixture. The paint responded very well to my airbrush. I tried a few shots of acrylic from their bottle to see the difference in performance. It was a real difference! The resulting liquid mixture smells about the same as Tamiya’s, and although you may want to use ventilation, this solvent is much more family friendly than pure alcohol, and more effective (at least for me) than pure water. The best part is that you can vary the proportions of each of the four ingredients until you find the perfect blend.
I have not tried this airbrush cleaning mix because I use Windex Ammonia Window Cleaner for this job. Windex doesn’t dilute acrylic paints, it dissolves them, and Windex Airbrush does not leave a bad smell (but if your spouse asks about the smell, tell him you’re cleaning your room).

How about cost? A gallon of distilled water will cost you about $1 at the supermarket. 99.9% isopropyl alcohol can be found for about US$3 per pint (473 ml). I tried to find acrylic flow improver and liquid restorer at local art supply stores but ended up ordering them on Amazon. The Flow Improver was about $12 for 250ml and the Fluid Retarder was about $10 for 118ml. I used a 500 ml bottle to calculate the cost of mix and materials.
