Wall Color With Brick Fireplace – If you have a brick fireplace, you can paint it to update its look. Today’s post will walk you through the steps I took to get my own painted brick fireplace and the materials needed (hint: it’s definitely not paint) in one afternoon.
As soon as we moved into our first house, I knew one of the first projects I wanted to do was paint our brick fireplace. Although I appreciate brick and often admire its character in other homes, the brick on our fireplace is not pretty. It has a dated red and orange color scheme, so I wanted a softer, more neutral feel for our home.
Wall Color With Brick Fireplace
I searched Pinterest for ideas and found tons of pictures of white painted brick fireplaces. The only problem is that I don’t like the look of white brick. There are also some tutorials on whitewashed tiles that are more covered, but I don’t go for that either.

I searched a bit more and found a product called Romabio Limewash. This is an authentic lime paint specially designed to create a unique lime wash effect on stone, brick and other building surfaces. It is a single-layer self-priming process made from lime mined directly in Northern Italy. You can read more about it here.
Update: This chalk paint has become incredibly popular since Studio McGee used it on the exterior tiles of their new home!
What I like the most is that you can achieve a custom look when it is used and you can cover the brick as much as you want. The product is natural and washes off within 5 days of application, so if I put it on and hate it, I can wash it off. It makes it seem less permanent and less intimidating.
When looking for inspiration online, my favorite whitewashed brick fireplaces have a two-tone effect and use a combination of colors to create a more natural, varied look rather than just one color. monochrome. I think it looks more dimensional and realistic with different colored bricks.
Paint A Brick Fireplace
I used 1 liter of Avorio White and 1 liter of Nube Gray and mixed each in the bucket with a lime-to-water rinse of about 1:1.
This tool is magic! It is very easy to use and release. You can’t be messy, seriously. At first when I mixed it I thought I didn’t have enough and it looked too watery so I didn’t think the color would stick. Don’t be fooled. I have tons of products to finish our entire fireplace and the color has good coverage.
1. I start by wiping the tiles with a damp cloth to make sure I have a clean surface to work on. I decided not to paint the fireplace because it was a wood burning fireplace and we covered it. Cover the mantel and the floor around the fireplace with a drop cloth because you will drip!
2. For the cleaner to work, you must first wet the surface before applying the product. I got a large spray bottle filled with water and sprayed it on the brick fireplace to get it wet.

3. In two separate 5 gallon buckets, I mixed the 2 colors I used following the instructions on the back of the can at a 1:1 ratio of water to lime product. I used a liter of Avorio White and a liter of Nube Grey. Because whitewash is designed to work with bricks and stones, allowing them to breathe, no priming is necessary. Save a step and why I love this limescale remover even more!
4. I first started at the top of the fireplace with Nube Gray and applied it randomly to individual bricks with my brick brush, not being too careful to ‘stay in line’ with each brick as I wanted it to look natural and realistic looking. imperfect. I highly recommend using a tile brush as it is much larger than a brush and will go much faster with this step. In addition, the bristles are very soft and easy to handle. *Update: I noticed that one reviewer didn’t like the masonry brush. I only use Romabi brand brushes, which work perfectly, I can’t speak for cheaper masonry brushes.
I continued painting random bricks, and went down the chimney. Since the product must be watery, it will run, so it’s best to start from the top.
5. After I finished the Nube Gray and went to the bottom of the fireplace, followed it with my bucket of Avori White and started whitewashing with the masonry brush, I started at the top again. But this time I painted the rest of the blocks, just sliding around the ones that were already painted Nube Grey. I was very sloppy with my process and didn’t try to paint perfectly around each Nube Gray brick. I actually bleached the gray bricks and it gives a natural look. Water dripping on gray bricks doesn’t bother me and I prefer the real feel.
Red Brick Fireplace Makeover Before And After
It was hard to get the broom into the joint lines between each brick because it was so big, so I went back to the 3 inch brush to get it in between each crack so it was completely covered.
6. I wait about an hour for the lime to dry, then I start from the top of the fireplace and wipe off some of the lime with a damp cloth. This is the beauty of the product. You have 5 days to clean and adjust to the desired strength before the layer hardens and hardens. I wanted to get it really well covered so no red brick would fall out, so I didn’t clean that much to be honest.
It really is that simple! I finished whitewashing the fireplace myself in an afternoon and it only took a couple of hours. It took a little longer to use two colors, but I think it’s worth it and I love how it turned out!
I completely replaced the fireplace for under $100. I cannot praise the Romabi descaler enough!
Stunning Brick Fireplace Designs That Add Cozy Style To Any Home
I painted the old fireplace yellow with high temperature matte black spray paint to update it and it looks much more modern. My dad also built a new wood shelf that is larger and better suited to the scale of the brick fireplace. I love how everything turned out!
Our living room is definitely one of my favorite rooms in our house. It is very cozy and comfortable. The antelope print rug pulls everything together and is SO SOFT! This is from an online carpet shop that has good prices and always sells well. You can buy my blanket here.
I recommend using a mat under the rug because the rugs are thinner and I like my rugs thicker and softer.
