Water Based Lacquer Sherwin Williams – Matt is a professional painter who owns his own painting company and specializes in interior and exterior painting.
I used Sher-Wood Hi-Bild Precat pigment varnish and matching primer for the first time on a cabinet painting project and wanted to share my experience with spraying the two products. I’ve always used water-based enamel to paint cabinets, but as I started more projects, I wanted to switch to something more durable.
Water Based Lacquer Sherwin Williams
Compared to pre-catalyzed lacquer, water-based enamel lacks hardness and stain resistance, ensuring long-lasting durability in busy home cabinets. Enamel works well for cabinets that don’t see much abuse, but for busy kitchens with frequent cooking and cleaning up of spills, enamel is definitely not the best choice.

Hi-Bild pre-catalyzed paint is available in extra white base and deep base, but deep base is hard to find in stock, so color combinations are limited to white and other light colors. The polish looks very similar to paint when dry, but the end result is much smoother and more professional than the enamel I used before.
The downside to using this product is the ordering process. Most paint stores always have trim and door enamel in stock. You can go to a paint store and pick up what you need for your project, but Sherwin Williams Industrial Coating Sherwin Williams is not regularly in stock. I had to pre-order mixing materials for my project and this product can only be dyed using a special color mixing machine that is only available at a Sherwin-Williams store in my area.
I primed and sprayed the oak cabinets for this project with two Hi-Bild lacquer-based primers, both from Sherwin-Williams’ Sher-Wood range. I won’t go too much into the prep process, but if you’re interested in learning more about the process, I have detailed articles on cabinet paint prep and paint prep.
My prep steps for painting these oak cabinets were pretty much the same as my process for staining the oak cabinets. After removing the doors and marking them for assembly, I cleaned and rinsed everything with a pre-paint cleaner. I sanded the doors and frames with my vibratory sander and filled the oak grain with Aqua Coat grain filler. The gap between the cabinets and the walls was sealed. Everything was covered for the syringe.
What Paint Should I Use To Paint Kitchen Cabinets?
Using a sprayer is the only realistic way to apply base and top coats for cats. Don’t try to dust and roll over the closet with either. The varnish dries very quickly and cannot be successfully applied with a brush. A good ending does not come from water. Use an airless sprayer or HVLP setup.
After preparing and spraying the cabinets, after mixing in the necessary catalyst, I sprayed the doors and drawer fronts with two coats of Sher-Wood Primer Surfacer. I soon noticed how quickly these materials dry. The door was dry in 30 minutes after spraying which I absolutely love. The ground water enamel I used in the past took at least four hours to dry before a new coat was applied.
Hi-Bild primer and varnish must be catalyzed to cure properly. A catalyst is an acid that causes the paint to dry hard and become more resistant to chemicals. Pre-catalyzed or pre-cat means that the shop usually adds a catalyst beforehand.
I added the catalytic converter myself instead of having my Sherwin Williams shop do it for me. Adding the exact amount of catalyst is very important. According to the specifications, I added four ounces of catalyst to a gallon of primer and three ounces to a gallon of Hi-Bild. The total service life is three months after the catalyst.

I first tried to spray the primer with my Graco 9.5 HVLP Pro Comp sprayer, but I couldn’t spray it hard enough to get a good finish before it started to dry, so I used a Graco GX19 Finish Pro airless sprayer. With my rotating spray stand to spray all cabinet doors. I masked the kitchen and sprayed the frames last.
My Graco GX19 sprayer worked great for spraying base and top coats. Pigment varnish seems to work best when sprayed with higher pressure. It should be applied quickly and thick enough to even out before it starts to dry. Drying begins literally within minutes of spraying. I set the pressure to 1900 PSI and used a Graco 310 fine spray nozzle, specifically the green FFLP tip. These spray tips reduce overspray and work well when spraying.
The finish looks harder and smoother than the paint. The varnish does not deteriorate after drying for 30 minutes to an hour. The temperature in the room was over 60 degrees. Ironing is much better than paint if it is sprayed properly. There is no orange peel texture. I used “reduced gloss” which was actually very shiny on the cabinet doors but not too shiny. Upon installation, I noticed that my fingerprint oil came off the surface without any problems. I feel much more comfortable using this product on cabinets than paint.
The biggest disadvantage of spray paint is its strong smell. It’s really bad. You must wear a paint mask and ventilate the spray area with box fans. Its fragrance remains for several days after drying. I highly recommend spraying the door outside and storing it in the garage to dry instead of inside.
What Products Do We Use On Cabinetry?
For those who plan to use a sprayer, lacquering the cabinets is a more durable alternative to water-based enamel. I have used Pro Industrial water-based alkyd enamel and Emerald urethane enamel with very good results, but neither dries as well as Hi-Bild varnish. There’s a reason cabinet makers don’t use cabinet paint.
Sherwood Pigment Primer and Lacquer is milky thin and is applied with an airless sprayer and a fine spray tip. Your cabinets have the same factory settings. I only used an airless sprayer to spray this product, but I’m sure a proper HVLP setup would work just as well. You have to be careful when spraying the cabinet frame vertically, because if you spray too hard, the paint will drip.
Its downside, in addition to the smell, is that this product usually requires a special order. You can’t just go to your local Sherwin-Williams store and pick up a few gallons. I received my order in less than a week, so it was not a big problem, but due to the lack of material, it may take longer. Check with your local Sherwin-Williams store to see if they carry any of these products.
I learned that white pigment varnish can yellow like oil enamel, but this Sherwood varnish contains a UV absorber to reduce and hopefully eliminate the yellowing. I don’t know how effective the UV absorber is, but this product is designed to reduce discoloration caused by yellowing.

In the search for a better quality water jacket, my company JHC recently started using SW Kemi. Aqua Plus. It’s rare that I’m this excited about a new paint job, but I’m very happy with the results we’ve gotten with this paint. Kem Aqua Plus is an aqueous pigmented finishing lacquer system intended for use in decorative furniture, cabinets and architectural factories. It forms a very strong, durable surface that is suitable for repeated use in traffic tree work where a high-quality surface treatment is required and solvent-based surface treatment is traditionally used.
The use of blue paint is not only much safer for the environment, but also neutralizes the risk of explosion. This is of particular concern when carrying out work where some items are not under the control of the contractors or the house is occupied.

Kem Aqua Plus is not intended for beginners
Our experience with Kem Aqua Plus began three months ago when our Sherwin Williams representative recommended it to paint our cabinets. This coverage has a learning curve that I find quite high. This is a very thin coating compared to the heavy body acrylic that many contractors are used to. Ebb and flow may occur and application techniques may need to be adjusted to achieve the desired result. it is a
