What Color To Paint Brick Fireplace – When we moved into our brick fixer house a year ago, we first planned to paint the outside of the house. In the end, due to the duration and location of the house, we decided to leave it and add other elements to break the monotony of the bricks.
So what does this have to do with fireplaces??? Good question! Although we were determined to keep the exterior brick natural, I also felt that the interior brick fireplace needed to be painted!
What Color To Paint Brick Fireplace
So what color should I choose? black! I love a nice center wall that introduces black. I feel that with the lighter elements in the space, black (or a darker shade, in general) provides a wonderful contrast.

I have to admit, even though my designer knew black was best, I was skeptical. And one day, I went to see him!
I’ve heard that certain types of paint are best for brick, but I had a gallon of low gloss semi-gloss black paint from another project and it worked great (and still great after 4 months ). .
Using a good quality angled brush, I applied some fine lines and painted only the ends. Here are photos during the changes…
Two full coats of paint + a third coat for some spots that need more coverage, it’s done.
Brick Fireplace Ideas For Any Design Style
Fortunately, I like the result. Not only is today’s fireplace a fantastic focal point, but natural brick is very busy and distracting (dirty). Now as a brick color, it really soothes the eye and provides a nice background for layers. Preparation is always the most important part of a good painting, so even though it’s the most annoying part, don’t skip it. that’s it! If you don’t clean your nails well, the paint won’t adhere well and stay on over time. I vacuumed and used a degreaser; However, if yours is particularly dirty, you can clean it first with a wire brush.
Tap any areas where you don’t want the paint to go, such as adjacent walls. I also recommend putting sliding tape under where the brick meets the floor, if possible. This ensures that no paint gets on the floor under the plastic. Then tap the floor surface carefully – don’t leave gaps in the plastic. I always like to lay the plastic all over the floor where I will be working and then cover with fabric. This ensures that nothing falls and damages the floor.
It is important to use a high quality primer before painting, as this will allow the latex paint to adhere to the brick. I used a special primer made for masonry called Loxon by Sharon Williams; However, you can also use standard keys. To apply the primer, use a stiff brush to press the paint into the mortar and various cracks in the brick. Then use a small roller to cover the flat parts of the brick. I just applied one coat of primer and followed the instructions for drying time.
Paint the brick with latex paint using the same method as the primer. You can use any gloss on your brick, and while a glossy finish will make your brick easier to clean, a matte or semi-matte finish will make the brick look more natural. I used the satin one for mine and am very happy with it! I put two coats of paint over the primer. (Color: Benjamin Moore white only)
Brick Anew Fireplace Painting: The Stunning Natural Brick Look
If you want to replace your existing helmet like I did, it can probably be easily removed by tapping it with a hammer or pry bar (my husband and I just used it on our hands, but it’s the equivalent of a helmet, So take it for what it is worth). I made our new mantel out of some maple boards. I love how it looks, and it’s under $80! (You can see the full DIY steps on my Instagram Stories (@katiebethlamb).
If you want a cheaper option, you can use pine board and it costs about $10; However, the rim would give a longer look and overall look better in my opinion. Mine was a custom made stain to match our kitchen vent hood. However, you can use any stain color to match the style of your home.
Then we added new fireplace doors (I chose them); However, if it’s not in your budget to do that, you can always paint the existing colors, which is what I did on the other side since we have a two-sided fireplace. You can check out my post on how to do it here!
