Before burning, remove all ash with a shovel or duster and place in a heavy-duty bag. Wipe off the remaining debris and clean the brush attachment (and don’t forget to clean the brush attachment afterwards – you don’t want to spread the dirt around the rest of the house!).
A folded board or folded towel will come in handy when working on this project. It is a good idea to wear gloves, a mask and goggles to avoid skin and eye irritation.
I tried three different natural cleaners on my very old oven and I have to say that a simple paste made with water and cream was the best for me. The vinegar and water spray did the trick, but it didn’t give me the results I wanted and I ended up scrubbing a lot. Baking soda and dishwashing liquid also worked, but again, a
This method is best used in small, compact areas around the stove or oven. Compared to the other two methods, it gave good results, but if you don’t have access to a lot of heavy cream, you can use baking soda or vinegar for the inside of your oven.

First, a warning: If your oven is more than 20 years old, you may want to choose a less harsh detergent and avoid the vinegar solution.
After cleaning the side walls of the stove, wash the bottom of the fire and the fire. Place the old rag to wet the wall with dirty water, then use the detergent, scrub, rinse and repeat until clean. Brick fireplaces are beautiful, warm and welcoming, but they are prone to unsightly (and potentially dangerous) dark lines, build-up of cracks and stains. How to make your own brick oven
The thought of cleaning a brick chimney conjures up mental images of the dusty streets of Victorian London with a manual chimney sweep – or Cinderella in the ashes of forced labor and depression.
Unfortunately, cleaning a brick fireplace isn’t all that romantic. It’s very, very easy – and it’s a good idea to do it as needed to prevent kiln fires and remove black marks from the bricks.

Read on as we show you the best non-toxic ways to quietly and safely remove soot from a brick oven.
The best option for safety is to extinguish the fire after each use – as an added bonus, it will help the fire burn better. Once the burning coals have turned to cold ash, shovel them out and place them in compost bins or garden beds. Clean the oven floor and sides often.
As soon as you see black marks on the bricks near the fireplace, it’s time to scrub. If your fireplace doesn’t light, if you light the fire.
This oven is in my office. We’ve never had a fire in the 12 years we’ve lived here, but the previous owner’s fireplaces remain in the masonry, both inside and out. It might not warm me up, but it’s a great place to show off this gorgeous toy piano I picked up at a must-have garage sale for $5.
How To Clean Fireplace Bricks Quickly And Effectively
Every fall and spring, give the testers new batteries and test them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you use more than one fireplace in your home, wire your alarms or connect them to your home’s electrical system.
The black stuff on top of the three bricks directly on the fire is unburnt carbon particles and sometimes ash. It has a fine dust-like texture and tends to settle on stoves and bricks near firewood.
The black, tar-like substance in the flame is creosote, the result of partially burned carbon particles. When volatile gases from wood are released during combustion, they travel upward, mix, compress, and collect on the wood and chimney walls. The crust can look like what you see here – firm and smooth – or it can be thin, thick or foamy. If it’s recent, it’s probably glue.
Salt and creosote are both common causes of furnace fires, so it’s important to remove buildup as soon as you see it.

The Brick Industry Association (BIA) warns against using harsh chemicals or steel brushes on bricks. The wrong – or the wrong – chemical cleaning solutions can discolor bricks, especially lighter shades. Highly acidic detergents can cause bricks to “acid burn”.
The good news is that, like the BIA and 99.9% of all blogs alive on the Internet, you probably have the right fireplace brick cleaning supplies in your closet.
Baking soda: To make a paste slightly thicker than toothpaste, mix baking soda with water and a bar or two of soap.
Step 2: Use a spray bottle filled with water to saturate the bricks. Clear brick absorbs water, so the cleaning solution can’t sink in and cause damage over time.

Step 4: Using circular motions, gently wipe a small portion of the brick. Erase some more, erase, erase!
I started with three bricks directly on the wood and used one of the three cleaning patterns suggested for each brick.
Dish soap, right: Mild dish soap is enough to use on any fireplace brick – even old ones. It didn’t go too well, but the brick still looks better!
Vinegar, neutral: Although vinegar is acidic, it is generally safe to use on brick, but it can damage older people and some minerals, so test an inconspicuous area first. The vinegar mixture worked a little better than the water and dish soap.

Baking soda, left: I mentioned the cleaning power of baking soda, but it’s a little abrasive, so try it somewhere first. Also, as far as I know, it sticks to the crack in the mud brick and turns white when it dries – so shake well.

To wash the bricks, I filled a spray bottle with clean water and put the nozzle on the river. The water washed the baking soda out of the small holes. I let it dry overnight and as you can see it did a great job.
How To Whitewash A Brick Fireplace (for Under $50)
Yes Yes. Well, I love the stone interior of this fireplace and didn’t want to spoil the ambiance. So I chose this spot – the upper left wall – and used a bar of baking soda the size of a bar of soap. I let it sit, I wiped it with vinegar, I let it sit a little more, I cleaned it and washed it.
I admit my skepticism – these things are well glued. But lo and behold, while I didn’t scrub it hard, the baking soda and vinegar treatment showed a lot of promise for burning old or new wood fires.
In the end, we got five clean bricks out of the business, which is good. Tbh, I’m like dust on stove bricks in the old world. Or I like it better than cleaning a brick with a toothbrush.
