Benjamin Moore Classic Gray Undertones – In the world of white paint, Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray (OC-23) is a subtle gray for rooms where white paint just doesn’t look right. It’s a light warm gray with subtle green tones you’ll never see and purple highlights in soft light. Sometimes it can read as warm and almost beige, other times it can read as warm and light gray.

Simply White has an LRV of 74.8, making it a very light gray or dark white. LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value, which is a measure of how light (LRV=100) or dark (LRV=0) a color is.

Use white instead if your room is too dark or you have a lot of green outside. It is a great solution for interior renovation with a Tuscan finish in sand.

This is a great color for any exposure – North, South, East or West. It’s very simple, it looks mostly white. In dark rooms to the north, the light can shine gray and has its own gray in rooms to the east and west, at any time of the day. It looks soft and lively white in south-facing rooms.

The problem with white paint that seems counterintuitive is that you need a lot of light to bring out the white. A dark room will have many shadows that will make the white color boring. Another challenge is that white reflects everything; grass, neighbor’s paint, pink flowers, even green grass. Bright white reflects every color around it. Classic Gray will cancel out all surrounding colors.

One more thing…we do not recommend trying Classic Gray paint or Benjamin Moore paint with any other Sherwin-Williams, Behr or any other brand. Paint color patterns are difficult to copy and white is especially difficult to correct. Learn more about mixing paint here.

The bottom ladder is plain gray with a simple white border. We love how it has a beautiful bronze Buddha statue. This color goes well with warm metals such as copper and nickel.

Clean whites such as Chantilly Lace (BM OC-65), Oxford White (BM 869) and Extra White (SW 7006) look clean and crisp with Classic Grey. Pale whites such as Simply White (BM OC-117) and Cloud White (OC-130) also look good with this color. Avoid pale whites like White Dove or creamy colors like Swiss Coffee as there won’t be enough contrast and the combination will look wrong.

In the bathroom, or in a room with high ceilings, you can paint the ceiling in the same Classic Gray as the walls, as in the bedroom below. This bedroom was a challenge to paint because of its eastern exposure and the green and blue houses across the street. In the summer, the green makes this room like a pine tree, but it can make the white walls green. We tried SW Amazing White (love the color) and it looks really pink. Eastern exposure is difficult and Classic Gray makes it easy.

Classic gray is a great color for an all white exterior color palette and the exterior will look brighter than you might expect.

It’s also one of our dirty secrets about exterior paint. When choosing an exterior color, you should keep in mind that the sunlight makes the paint 5 times brighter than the interior. In our bright Colorado sun it seemed 10 times brighter! We like to use this as an exterior color because it’s not too bright to use on tires, it’s not yellow or cream. That’s right! It can also look nice as white exterior paint colors. We have specified Classic Gray below for beautiful home decor. The owner (and the painter) were skeptical, but it turned out great!
