What’s not to love about applying acrylic paint?! It is impossible to resist. It’s beautiful, suitable for beginners and produces professional quality images. It’s fun, fast, and works in all your favorite colors! It is not limited to just one color palette.

How To Mix Acrylic Paint For Pouring

One of the problems I have run into is understanding which stocks are the best. And how to measure each supply so that the acrylic paint pours evenly. No one wants to talk about their exact recipe. So here is mine.

Because you want your paint to flow, you never want to use heavy acrylic paint. Anything easy makes it great. As for brands, anyone will do, it’s just a matter of finding a color palette that you like.

You want your acrylic pouring medium to have a creamy texture – so old paint or anything baked on should also be avoided. Fresh, liquid paint will work well for making acrylic paint.

Flotrol is what most professional purers prefer. I don’t really like Decoart because it doesn’t make good colors or make good cells. Golden Paint Brand is also a great pouring medium. Sometimes it’s fun to test new ingredients and see what you react to, but Flotrol is the best to start with and what most people like.

If you’re using a different brand, start with the same measurements we use here. Remember that your finished product is really about structure and sometimes you may need to make adjustments. As long as you have water and alcohol, you can make the necessary adjustments to bring your ingredients to a liquid consistency.

Both of these additions are optional, but adding a touch of alcohol is a popular addition to acrylic paint. Alcohol pushes the paint into pieces so it’s a great addition to paint because it can create nice patterns. These stocks are never measured because they best match the thickness of the paint and floatrol mix you are making. The best solution is to start with a few drops and then add more as needed.

For alcohol, 70% or 90% is fine – but 70% is usually cheaper, so it’s the best choice.

Silicone is another optional extra – but it produces amazing results! Ideal silicones will often be labeled as treadmill lubricants. It is similar to alcohol in that it changes color speed and in this case creates beautiful “cells” or small areas of color variations and patterns. There are countless ways you can add silicone to your paint to create unique results. The best way to start is to add a few drops and mix them into the acrylic paint pouring medium before pouring.

Once your paint is on the canvas, you can move it in any direction to get the effect you want, and you can even use a heat gun, creme brulee torch or blow dryer. You can! The heat gun can move the paint and dislodge the cells. When you heat the silicone to a certain temperature, it rapidly adheres to the surface and forms a unique type of cell.

To thin and mix acrylic casting paint, you need two main ingredients: acrylic paint and casting medium. You mix paint with medium until your resulting mixture runs like warm honey, motor oil, or chocolate syrup. If necessary, add a little water to further thin.

Given these factors, and since we don’t know what you’re using specifically, we’ll go over the most common consistency issues and give some examples of what to look for in your mix.

When we talk about consistency, we’re talking about the flow and texture of your paint, medium, and additive mix.

When it comes to acrylic casting, which is a fluid art, of course the mixture should be easy to pour! Here are some common household items you can compare your consistency to – sometimes this can help you visualize what your coating should look like.

Basically, your mixture should be loose but not runny. It shouldn’t fall out of your mixer in clumps or drain quickly, like you’re submerging kitchen utensils. When you pull the mixing tool out of the paint mixture, the paint should come out easily and evenly.

If your paint is too thin and runny, you may want to add a little more paint. Add a little at a time, continuing to mix between additions.

If your paint is too thick, more medium is needed. Again, add a little at a time to reach the desired consistency.

Acrylic Paints For Pouring

Adding a little color or a little medium at a time is really important. You can always add more, but you can’t remove what you’ve added, and dancing back and forth between adding color and adding medium is no fun!
