Before we get started, let me show you how great our new paint and hardware looks!

As you may remember from this post (where I painted the inside of my cabinets with chalkboard paint), I mentioned that I recently painted my cabinets. This was true. When we first moved into this house, the kitchen cabinets were already painted. It was the worst painting job ever done. EVAH. There were heavy brushstrokes everywhere, and the spray-painted fittings and fixtures were rusty and ugly. It was a disaster.

The Best Way To Paint Kitchen Cabinets (no Sanding!)

After painting the entire interior of the cabinet, I got bored. So instead of painting the exterior properly, I poured another coat of paint over the old paint. I actually made the bad paint job of the previous owners even worse.

I completely ignored the kitchen cabinets for the next 6 months while I worked on other things in our small kitchen, like the dirty grout and the counter. Then when I felt awake again, I decided to paint the cabinets properly. I also decided to give myself a big boost after using some fancy new cabinetry.

You might be wondering… but in Virginia, my cupboards are not painted. They’re just sticks. How does this help me? Well, because after painting many pieces of old furniture, I can promise you that the process is very similar if you are painting over old paint or old wood. And I’ll walk you through how to paint your cabinets, whether you have painted cabinets or just wood. Promise.

You really don’t need to paint your cabinets. I’ve seen tons of tutorials on paint thinners and spray paints, and they’re pretty good. But, if you’re an average person like me who doesn’t have expensive equipment and you’re trying not to spend a lot of money, but still want to get good results while doing it, you can take a you are more flexible.

How I Painted My Kitchen Cupboards On A Budget

Also, create a workspace. I made all this right in the kitchen. I laid out my favorite blanket that I live in while I work (comfortable and washable) and got to work. Maybe you want to use a drop cloth, but I’m a weirdo who enjoys my butt while I work.

Also, make sure all your things (food, dishes, etc.) are out of the way so they don’t get dusty.

Remove all doors from the cabinet frames, pull the tires and remove all hinges and door hardware. That photo was taken about halfway down.

Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

I didn’t bother labeling the covers so they wouldn’t get tangled when I removed them. A good tip (for those of you who don’t like whiteboards) is to put a piece of tape on the back of your cabinets to remind you where they go.

This is an important step in the cabinet painting process. It’s also the step that makes this tutorial work for everyone, regardless of the current state of your cabinet. Whether you have old, sticky paint on your cabinets or just some type of polyurethane (glossy material) on the wood, what you use is sanding to remove and repair it. surface for painting. Start with a high/medium grit and just fine tune everything. I used a dirt power sander to get the large areas and then went into the small cracks and corners by hand.

After you remove most of the dirt, sand with fine sandpaper to remove chips or stubborn stains.

Note: You should not completely remove the paint or clear coat. The goal is to have a relatively green area to stick a new coat of paint to.

All this sanding will make the paint stick better and give you a nice smooth surface.

I used elmer wood filler to fill the holes where the old hardware was installed because I wanted my new hardware to be high. You will also want to use wood filler for any dents, dings, or scratches.

Apply a small amount, smooth it out (I’m actually a caveman and I just used a butter knife) and let it dry for about an hour.

When the wood filler is completely dry, sand to smooth the surface with fine sandpaper.

Funny story… I was a complete dummy and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t drill through wood. In fact, Jesse drilled all the holes for the new hardware. I got him to take my photo pretending to be the world’s best pimp, and since it’s funny and makes me laugh… I’m spilling my embarrassing secret.

I called Jesse at work, flustered and upset, telling him I didn’t understand the terrible exercise.

He came home, tried it, and did it in about 2 seconds. But then he laughed and admitted that the drill was useless and boring like a watermelon.

If you are a regular person with a regular drill, you should be able to do it yourself. But, if you’re like me and have a useless poro, ask your muscle man to do it and take a fake photo and pretend you did. 🙂

Putty is a little bit of magic. I used it on these old junk cabinets. Before painting, caulk between any cracks or seams you may find. It gives you the best result as it makes everything look flawless and perfect.

My favorite color for cabinets is silk white. It’s actually Behr Silky White, but I’m mixing it in Glidden because it’s cheaper. In my experience, at $5 less a litre, there isn’t much of a difference.

I was able to paint all my cabinets with 2 gallons of paint. If you have painted your cabinets, the paint should cover easily. I only needed 2 coats of paint over everything.

How you apply the paint is very important in determining what the final result will be. You want it to look professional and free of brush strokes. Many professionals use spray paint to do this. But, if you’re like me and don’t have fancy tools, you can get by without a brush.

And when the paint is still very wet, go over the entire paint again and press gently with your mini-foam roller. It’s like magic.
