Color To Paint Brick Fireplace – Not having a homeowner to answer for the first time, the homeowner is interested in fixing an old living room fireplace.

Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts and go for it. Ask Sneha Bhuner, who is itching to freshen up the old brick fireplace in her 1985 farmhouse in Lincoln, NE. Although he had never tackled a large project before, he decided to experiment with color to introduce a more modern color palette.

Working 2 to 3 hours a day for a week, he refreshed the brown walls and orange-red brick with white and gray, giving the fireplace a cleaner, more modern look.

He began to clean the cobwebs from the joints with a brush, using a damp cloth to remove the accumulated dirt and grime from the surface of the bricks. He then gave the entire chimney a coat of all-purpose white primer to seal the masonry, followed by white latex paint to create a clean canvas. Sneha bought two different shades of gray paint to apply to the bricks using a sponge, making sure the mortar lines were white. She found that she could achieve four shades of gray by applying both colors with a light or heavy hand. By painting the walls a complimentary gray color, the finished fireplace looks more modern, and the technique was so successful that Sneha installed it on the brickwork of the front wall of her house to work outdoors. “Every time I look at it,” she says, “I’m like, ‘Wow, Sneha, you did a great job!’

If you have a brick fireplace, you might consider painting it for an updated look. Today’s post walks you through the steps and materials I needed to get my brick fireplace painted in one afternoon (hint: it’s not actually paint).

As soon as we moved into our first home, I knew one of the first projects I wanted to do was paint our brick fireplace. While I appreciate brick and its role in most other homes, the brick on our fireplace is not pretty. It had reds and oranges that screamed vintage and I wanted a softer, more neutral look in my home.

I went on Pinterest to get ideas and saw lots of pictures of brick fireplaces painted white. The only problem was that I didn’t like the look of the all white bricks. There are also several tutorials for bleached ends that have more coverage, but that’s not what I go for.

I did some more research and found a product called Romabio Limewash. It is an authentic lime color specially designed to create a distinctive lime wash effect on stone, brick and other stone surfaces. It is a 1-coat process and is self-priming and is made directly from limestone in Northern Italy. You can read more about it here.

Update: This lime wash product has become so popular that Studio McGee used it on their brick exterior in their new home!

What I like most about it is that you can get a customization of how it is applied and you can cover the brick as much or as little as you want. The product is a natural product and washes off within 5 days of application, so if I apply it and hate it, I can always wash it off. It makes it less permanent and intimidating.

As I browsed online for inspiration, what really struck me was the two-tone effect of the brick fireplace with a lemon wash and the combination of colors used to achieve a different look that looks natural rather than one solid color. . I think having different colored bricks makes it look more dimensional and authentic.

I went with 1 quart Evereo White and 1 quart Knob Gray and mixed each in its own bucket at a 1:1 ratio using Livewash.

This stuff is magic! It is very easy to use and forgiving. You seriously can’t go wrong. At first when I mixed it I didn’t think it was enough for me and it looked so watery that I didn’t think it would hold the color. Don’t be fooled I have plenty of product to completely cover our entire fireplace and paint.

1. I started by wiping the brick with a damp cloth so that I had a clean surface to work on. I decided not to paint the firebox since it is a wood burning stove and we will cover it. Cover your fireplace and the floor around your fireplace with a blanket because you will drip!

2. For lime wash to work, you must wet the surface before applying the product. I took a large spray bottle full of water and sprayed the brick chimney to dampen it.

3. In 2 separate 5-gallon buckets, I mixed my 2 colors I was using for lemon wash with a 1:1 ratio of water to water following the directions on the back of the can. I used a quarter of Evergreen White and a quarter of Nube Green. Because limewash is designed to work with brick and stone, allowing it to breathe, there is no need to prime it. Saves a step and why I love this lemon wash so much!

4. I first started with the knob gray above the fireplace and applied it randomly to the single bricks using my masonry brush, being very careful not to stay “inside the lines” of each brick. I wanted it to look natural and authentic and not perfect, I recommend a mason brush as it is much bigger than a paint brush and goes a lot faster at this stage. Also, the bristles are really flexible and make it easy to work with. *Update: I noticed that a reviewer didn’t like the architectural brush. I’ve only used the Romabio brand brush which works great, I can’t speak for the cheap stone brushes.

I continued to paint random bricks while working under the fireplace. Since the product is meant to be watery, it is better to start from the top, so it moves.

5. Once I was done with the nub gray and got to the bottom of the chimney, I followed it up with my bucket of Avorio White and started applying the lime wash with my masonry brush, starting again at the top. But this time I painted the rest of the bricks, soon going around the bricks that were already painted Noob Grey. I was very messy with my process and didn’t try to paint completely around every knob of gray hair. In fact, I have found a white lime wash on the gray ends and it gives a natural look. The plants on the gray bricks didn’t bother me and I liked that it felt more authentic.

It was hard to get into the mortar lines between each brick with a masonry brush because it was so big, so I went in between to cover each brick with a 3” paintbrush.

6. I waited an hour for the lime wash to dry and then went to the stove top and used a damp cloth to wipe off some of the lime wash. This is the beauty of the product. You have 5 days to clean it up and customize it to your liking before it gets calcified and hard. I wanted the red brick to be well covered so none of it would show, so I honestly didn’t clean much.

It’s as simple as it really is! I ended up washing the oven one afternoon with lime and it really only took a few hours of work. It took a long time to use both colors, but I think it was definitely worth it and I love how it turned out!

For less than $100, I completely replaced my oven. I can’t sing the praises of Romabio Lime Wash enough!

I painted the old gold fireplace mantle to update it with high temperature matte black spray paint and it looks so modern. My father also built a new wooden mantel that was thicker and went better with the brick fireplace surface. I love how it all turned out!

Our living room is definitely one of my favorite rooms in our house. It is very comfortable and relaxing. An antelope print rug pulls everything together and it’s so soft! This is from an online rug store that has great prices and always has sales. You can buy my carpet here.

I would recommend using a rug pad under the rug because the rug is thin and my rugs are thick and dark.
