Deciding which is the best deck paint can be very confusing. I have used them all and here are the ones I use and recommend.
Kilz Porch And Patio Floor Paint
From 30+ years as a painter I recommend buying the best bridge paint on the market that will save you time and money. A few years away from painting was worth it. Quick list: My favorite deck paint options, all available online:
Best Basement Floor Paint & Painting Floor In 5 Steps
I use and recommend Benjamin Moore INSL-X Upstairs Floor and Patio Paint: (see price online) Not just for floors. It is thick, but not too thick. I spray this product often, but when I do, I hold a 3 or 4 inch brush in one hand and mechanically push the paint into the grooves of the wood. If you need one and a primer, this is the key for both primers. For the second coat I spray instead of brushing. On this page you will find articles related to spraying, spraying coverage, etc
I find that it lasts and resists fading from the sun. Comes in the same 5 colors as the non-slip deck color (shown below).
Five colors are too many for a deck paint: usually, it is usually gray or another gray. It can be used indoors (it is a very bad idea to use it
Interior color) and also works with concrete and brick. See the spec sheet on this amazing color: Ben Moore website).

Why so much cost? Low budget paint and your painted deck will look great…but after a while…you know what happens. If you lose quality, you will be there every few years!
It costs less to use very good paint primers and high quality deck paint. And you need to prepare well (read our post about it). Spending more up front costs less in the end.
For a topcoat, get a quality anti-slip paint, again Ben Moore is the man. This great cover color is discussed further below.
I spray cover paint and please wear a respirator when I spray. People seem to love the big dog mouth breather. Afraid I wear half masks with filters that are interchangeable for toxic and/or dust. Read my post about it: I have the basic half masks (6100, 6200 and 6300 which come in small, medium and large) and also the inner and outer filters with the clip. The paper holds the cartridge for a very long time. Then replace what you need. Not expensive at all.

Now, if you’ve already decided what painted deck you want, move on to how to paint your deck below, but let this painter talk you through a once-in-a-lifetime stain.
All decks move and deck paint can peel, but not as decks. This is why you should really consider the stain instead of the color.
We’ll get back to coloring in a second. But what do I, a professional painter of 35+ years, do with my deck?
Stand up straight and put the tires on a once in a lifetime, easy to apply, inexpensive stain and seal deck. I took a chance on it and I love it. Parks Canada uses it on many builds and my paint shop manager highly recommends it.

I understand that you may be ready to stain all of your exterior wood, but again, I highly recommend looking at this as a clear stain. We have a whole post on the best deck stains and another post on how to stain your deck.
Primers fill small grooves and seal the wood from absorbing the color of your topcoat. They provide the necessary bond to make the cover color last. I learned the difference between brushing and spraying. You need to press the primer into the grain of the wood to protect it. from that side
I contacted Benjamin Moore, and while they agree with me about painting the decks, they recommend Aqua Lock Plus, a water-based sealer and primer that is incredibly cheap on Amazon… how do you do it? But regardless, it is an interior and exterior waterproofing primer that is used in many situations.
Another great primer is the oil-based Cover Stain Primer, the best cover primer ever. It costs a little more now, but in the long run you pay less and do less work. Bonding is key.

The “knot” of the wood can remain through your primer and topcoat. So use a shellac-based primer for areas that may bleed with the main primer. If you don’t do this step, you will show the knot with every layer of topcoat you apply. In some rare cases, two coats of ‘spot-priming’ may be necessary, but you can use a regular primer, such as the one available from BIN online. (Keep some rubbing alcohol with you, as this is your solvent.)
Even for a large deck, you probably need a quarter BIN to spot-prime. You just need to make the “knot” and no other points. Buy an inexpensive brush, cut off the handle and put it in the box for later. Yes, I know: gunky, but a foundation brush doesn’t have to have straight bristles: you just need a brush that doesn’t forget bristles.
I don’t use the same color for walking surfaces like railings etc. The floor takes a lot of hits.
Save money by getting quality deck paint. It also lasts longer than cheaper items, saving you money in the long run. You need 2 items.

They come, and they usually tell me to put on a low gloss (satin) or semi-gloss. In my experience the flat finish will get dirty quickly. In addition to the Ben Moore Tough Shield at the top, Killz has a good selection.
A wet walking deck can be dangerous. Even decking made for walking surfaces can become slippery when wet, which is especially dangerous on stairs. So the solution is to use textured paint for walking on deck surfaces. Comes in the same 5 colors as the Ben Moore Tough Shield shown at the top of this page That would be a great solution for walkways and railings etc.
You can also just add silica, not beach sand (it’s too rough), just brush it into your paint as you apply it. The biggest name in DIY online says to use beach sand, but sorry Bob, that makes the rip out of normal use. Large grains stick. Let’s do it right.
What you can do is use a screen/window filter and filter out the larger grains of beach sand: fine. Silica really works and does not reduce the life of the paint and you feel safe about it. Here is my video showing you how. Look mom, I’m on the internet!
How To Refinish And Paint An Old Wooden Porch And Deck
We also installed anti-slip tread tape for the stairs. Let the paint harden, then clean very well and it won’t come off.
A woman in a bar asked me, “What’s your sign, man?” “It’s slippery when wet,” I said. There we are ready.
If your old deck paint now has oil paint on it, I’m sorry to tell you that you need to sand it (well) before applying latex or oil paint. There are some primers that stick to non-glossy (non-porous) surfaces, but I would never trust an ad or product statement to make such an important decision. What if you call in a year?
UV rays from the sun are not well blocked by oil-based paints and this means you have to keep layering: not so good!

Just pick a warm dry day and put your scrapers and sanders together. We have listed these tools here. Go around your deck and any crack you see just open it up with your scraper, sand the edges with a feather (we use very coarse and fine grit). Keep your razor sharp:
Different types of sandpaper (this site has many options). If you doa lot, you want to get your palm sander (shown). Very decent price. I’m buying one for my brother this Christmas… I hope you’re not reading this bro. The unit does not need special paper. Who needs special paper to think about Sanders? Crazy.
This sander uses any “hook and loop” circular paper. This box is a decent offering with 100 pieces and almost perfect reviews.
Prime bare wood (including new wood) with a quality primer. I really like the prime slot mentioned above. Once the primer is dry, hit it with maybe one coat, but usually two coats of your good quality topcoat and you’re set for durability…probably 3-4 years.

The downside here is that the color of older paints fades a little every year, even of good quality
