When we first walked into the dining room of this house, it lacked interest and character. (See before and after photos here.) The tiles and simple beige paint gave the room a fresh, soft feel. But I knew it had more potential than just a table and chairs. Here is the finished product:
As seen on Fixer Upper, Chip and Joanna updated the dining room with a new redwood fireplace, farmhouse table, dark metal chandelier, and black accents that contrast the white brick.
You don’t need a great piece of art to make a big impact. Go to the scrap yard and find an old architectural piece, like the window frame on this wall, for the focal point of the room. I love how the wood in this window stands out against the freshly painted wall. Windows and crown molding add dimension to the wall, making the room warmer and more inviting.
We kept the palette of this room neutral and added color through natural accents. We added texture and greenery to the wall with a faux magnolia wreath, filled a white vase with flowers over the mantel and added color to the table with a wooden tray of bright green pears.

We sat down with this designer to learn more about his inspiration, process and journey to writing the book.
Your book talks a lot about building a house that tells a story. How to do it so that you are not confused or confused?
Joanna Gaines: In the early stages of designing a home, your constants should be the foundation. Everything else you layer on are pieces that tell your story and make your home personal. It’s always good to find a balance and let certain rooms “breathe” so you never feel cramped. It also depends on your personality. Someone feels comfortable in a minimalist space, while others are inspired by having a lot around them. That’s what the whole book is about – understanding that there really are no rules – it’s just what works best for you.

JG: I think people are finally starting to understand the idea that a house changes over time… the pieces you expect make the process so much fun. It’s never a good idea to buy everything from a catalog and be done with it. Of course you need the basics like a sofa or a dining table, but after that it’s good to look at a blank wall and say “I’m going to leave this wall blank until I find ‘that’ thing”. it makes sense. That it’s me. This way you ensure that the space is authentic to the story you are trying to tell.
What spaces do you recommend going crazy with, over-the-top accents or lots of personal touches?
JG: It can be fun in spaces you don’t use much, like a formal dining room or library, because you’re not in that space all the time. I always say that bathrooms and entryways are great places to go crazy because they’re smaller and very busy, but you don’t spend a lot of time there. However, there are ways to do this in busier areas like the living room. I always recommend hanging a bunch of photos on the wall, but choose similar frames or black and white filters to create a common thread.
What’s the secret to creating a space you won’t want to leave, no matter what your design aesthetic is? What kind of decor should you buy to last forever, and which parts can be easily replaced?
