On a recent lakeside vacation, I couldn’t help but notice a lot of faded, gray, or dark charcoal surfaces. So, here are the 6 best (and probably happiest) exterior colors for your lakefront or beach home.

Our summer vacation this year was at a lake house on Shawnigan Lake. It was cloudy the day we rented a small boat to go around and see the houses right on the water.

Our Most Used Exterior Paint Colors

Huge amount of coal found on buildings containing coal. Many houses that were a variation of this color scheme:

Then, when the whole big house disappeared into a bleak and heavy coal, turquoise was introduced (or there were also lots of red umbrellas and chairs) to try to brighten things up.

I’m here to tell you that once you get this far with charcoal, it seems like it’s too late to use color.

It is painted in the color of weathered wood (in other words, from light to medium green-gray). The look is fresh enough to support a beautiful turquoise accent on the front door.

Or a fresh, pale blue-gray that looks a little warmer and greener. Here it is (below). And it has to have a lot of white trim to pull it off.

Of course, any blue color is a classic choice for a beach house. See how it looks against the blue sky below.

But Marie, what if my house isn’t a traditional beach house with crisp white trim? What then?

On the West Coast, where we live and where we vacationed this year, modern contemporary homes are more the rule than the exception. It is designed to blend in with the harsh natural environment of the coast.

While this style works well with dark bronze or black windows, wood and stone accents, and neutral palettes, you should aim for a fresh, inviting look. This means introducing contrast.

Instead of going for charcoal gray or black (or in the past trend, brown, taupe and taupe), choose a soft white or pale neutral to break up the heavy darks. and warmer wood tones to brighten the palette. Or a little green to give the picture color.

To be honest, if I were building a beach house, I’d go with a more traditional style so I could paint it blue or turquoise with lots of bright white trim. That would be my happy place.

But you have to think about the style of the neighborhood. The trick is to find the freshest, most timeless look within those limitations.

I recently talked about painting the interior of your mare house, but what about painting the outside of the house? We spend so much time outside that it’s hard for me to say whether you should paint indoors or outdoors. It is different from your home. At home, we work all day and often don’t have the opportunity to stay outside until the weekend. Even then, with our commitments, we’re lucky if we get a few hours outside at the weekend. But your house by the lake? It’s 24/7 outdoor living, and if you don’t really like the exterior color, it’s going to get on your nerves all summer long. Here are the paint colors I think are the best for transforming the look of your lakefront home.

You may have already noticed that I really like this color. What can I say? It’s the perfect navy shade that goes everywhere. At first glance, you might think this color would be too dark for a lake house, but hear me out. Any shade of blue looks great on the exterior of a lake house as it is another element of blue that surrounds the environment.

The only time I would avoid the dark is if you have a house near a lake, if the place is more like a forest with big trees that cast shadows on the house. It will still look great on a bright and sunny day, but can start to feel oppressive on gray and rainy days. Any other environment will be enhanced by Gentleman’s Grey.

The Way Home

It’s a color you can confidently use in your home, both indoors and outdoors. It’s a coastal town by nature, and it looks like it belongs on a lake, doesn’t it? It is an interesting color that changes with the light. Sometimes there is a little more blue, but sometimes you see a hint of green. It always has those cool gray tones that keep the colors from looking too bright. And if there are many colors in your environment, don’t worry. This color goes well with everything.

Are you looking for a color that blends perfectly with the natural environment? Duxbury Gray is essentially wood turned into color. Leans towards gray, but has a strong green tint. Pair it with crisp white trim for a classic look that honors the color’s historic roots.

Just like Duxbury Gray, this color will blend in with its surroundings and give your lakeside home a calm, natural feel. If you have a house that doesn’t impress, you don’t want paint that stands out. It wants to blend organically into its surroundings, and that’s what you get with this beauty.
