Paint Colors To Match Wood Trim – If you’re looking to update your home and want to work on most of the honey oak cabinets or kitchen trim, a few coats of paint in the right shade can instantly bring your space into the modern age.
Oh Honey Oak A favorite wood in 80’s and 90’s homes. Oak is not naturally this honey shade, but amber over time due to stains and the use of polyurethane.

Unfortunately, honey oak kitchen cabinets, trim, cabinets, doors, and even flooring are not the modern look most homeowners want these days.
How To Mix Wood Tones Like A Pro
If you don’t have a huge budget right now or just don’t feel like decorating your cabinets or your whole house, you can work with your Honey Oak Nightmare!
Interior wall color can do wonders to transform any space, and rooms full of wood are no different.
First you need to decide if you want to highlight the color of the wood or tone it down and hide it a little.
The most important thing to understand about honey oak is that it has color, and that color is orange or more yellow-orange.

Of course, other woods can also be stained and turn the same orange or yellow color, but we usually call them “honey oak” when we see these colors.
Other woods, such as maple or pine, can be distinctly yellow or orange due to the stain or polyurethane used to finish them and the fact that amber polyurethane turns amber over time.
When looking for paint colors to pair with soft oak trim, flooring or cabinetry, you should always consider the undertone of the wood you’re working with.
Unfortunately, it probably won’t. Like most things from the 80s and 90s, Honey Oak has had its hay day and probably won’t be back anytime soon.
The Best (and Worst) Paint Colors To Sell A House In 2021
But just because honey oak is no longer standard doesn’t mean your home has to be stuck in the same era forever.
Whether your decor, furniture, or flooring is yellow-orange, there are things you can do to really brighten up your home.
In order to understand which colors work with these wood colors, it is first important to understand the basics of color theory.
Honey oak, obviously known for its orange color and strong grain, should either be understated, or you should really embrace it and choose a color that works well with it.
Fixer Upper Paint Colors
To achieve this goal with color, you either create a coordinating (similar) color palette that uses colors similar to the dominant undertone (orange) to help blend the honey oak, or you create a contrasting palette that includes some color. Complement or contrast colors that enhance or create a focal point of honey oak.
Determining which paint color works best with whatever palette you choose to work with requires consideration of the undertones of your wood.
There are two main ways to change the color of soft oak doors or cabinets by painting the walls:
Finding the right color for sweet oak cabinets, trim, or flooring comes down to finding a harmonious color palette, whether you use matching or complementary colors.
Tips And Tricks For Choosing The Perfect Paint Color
If you’re already confused by these color theory terms, look at the color wheel and find the color you want to work with. Honey oak is orange. From there I suggest using one of the following two methods to create a consistent color palette:
By using two colors on either side of the main color, you create a palette of similar colors. In this case we will be working with orange, so the colors on both sides will be yellow and red.
Obviously you won’t paint your walls orange, yellow, or red, but these are things you might want to work with. Therefore, yellow, orange-beige and gray tarpaulins with a warm and creamy beige undertone work well. Avoid beige with green undertones as they look flat against the warmth of the cabinets.
If you surround the warm oak with another warm color, it will blend in and give you a bold look. A soft, warm neutral color with an orange or yellow undertone gives the space a cohesive feel and helps fade the oak.
Mixing Wood Tones In Your Room
Again, keep the colors natural and earthy. Warm oak has a very natural feel and can look great with natural colors. You want to make sure there is enough contrast to avoid cluttering the space. I find that using gray (although it’s technically a good undertone) can leave a room with too much honeyed oak.
Using colors on the opposite side of the color wheel gives you a complementary palette. The opposite color of orange is blue, which ranges from yellow to purple. Any light blue contrasts sharply with the honeyed oak orange and intensifies the color effect.
Before you think contrast is a bad thing, it’s not. Contrasting colors work beautifully in well-designed rooms to create a contrasting color scheme.
Creating a contrast with orange furniture can be a good idea. You don’t need a basic light blue color on the walls! However, using this color in a more subtle way (a blue-green, for example) creates balance and brings life to those cabinets without overpowering them.

Based on what we’ve talked about so far, we’ll limit paint colors to warm gray or beige (or even pink to reddish) with yellow or orange undertones. If we want to make those cabinets a focal point and really pop, we focus on complementary colors and introduce blues and greens.
