Sherwin Williams Brush & Roller Selection Guide By Sherwin Williams
Back at the front of the house, Brent and I have been busy cleaning the solarium. The last time we talked, we were painting the ceiling, which really helped warm up the room.
The room looks good, as long as you look up, but as the eye moves down… oh-how… palm… to… forehead… Yancho’s bucket is completely different. Really blah and needs some serious help.
The floor is a 12″ x 12″ square, which does not set the forest on fire in the cold department, but even worse, it always looks dirty. The grout was a light color and was stained when we bought the house. No matter how much we clean the box, it always has a terrible smell. Also, light-colored tiles with light-colored grout show dirt very easily, even if the tiles are thoroughly cleaned, one trip outside so Luke goes out or throw some burgers on the grill and we’re probably back to one tile because every piece of debris that Is tracked in is seen immediately. The solarium is a bridge between the group and the cave to see a lot of traffic, so the floor in this place really needs to be something more forgiving.
When we consider our options, we really want to find a solution that will solve our problem aesthetically without breaking the bank. We have big fish to fry in every part of the house and we don’t want to spend a lot of money on a solarium floor. So, for a while we kept a big “TBD” on the project and continued to live. Then one random day, as luck would have it, one of my favorite blogs, Young House Love, posted about a DIY makeover they did for the bathroom floor. The long and the short – he bought a stencil and painted a design on the floor. The results are dramatic and last 5 hours. The lamp went off, the angels started singing and the little voice in my heart that told me to buy horse heads and other nice things shouted… “BINGO!”

I right clicked on Royal Design Studio Stencils and started looking at my options. There are a lot of cool stencils on the site and Brent and I spent a few nights narrowing down our favorites, but finally decided on the Herringbone Shuffle Stencil.
While we wait for the template to arrive, we prepare the space for the new floor. To start with, we bought Sherwin William water-based epoxy paint in Extra White.
This paint is highly recommended for special applications due to the durability it offers. This paint is often used in commercial areas with high traffic such as schools and hospitals.
With the case painted and stencils in hand, we were ready to go. This template looks like pre-painting.

Let me stop here and say here is a photo of me all chipper and smiley holding a stencil taken at the end of October and the last picture you see further down the post from the beginning of February. The project actually took about 4 months from start to finish. We don’t do these projects every day, but it’s definitely more than expected. I calculated each scenario at 5 hours, but unfortunately for us that timeline was not in the cards for our site.
We went to town taping down our shavings and rolling in some paint as IHL and countless others have done for us with great results. Unfortunately, we did not get good results in our first box of stencils, neither the second nor the third. What. YR. Hell? Why is this not working for us? The answer quickly became clear: growth. Young House Love painted a stencil on the basement aka a flat surface without grout. At the grout line, a small valley is created on the floor, where the paint from the roller will collect and open, taking the paint outside the stencil line as well as on the back side of the stencil (big stencil problem). If we have continued this way, we have to get a small paint brush and hand paint literally every part of the stencil that is along the gout line.
So, we repainted over the first stencil pattern with our white paint and came up with plan B: spray paint. Genius, right? We think so too. But before we could start using the spray paint, we hung the poster board around the entire perimeter of the room and then we taped the poster board to the floor around the stencil we were working on.
It’s a pain, but if you’ve ever used spray paint, you know that paint mist travels and quickly covers everything in it. As our walls and floor are white, this is important because the dark gray fog will be very noticeable.

After the box is sprayed, we will wait for a while. Sometimes hours and sometimes days. We wanted to make sure the paint was nice and dry so it wouldn’t smear when we lifted the stencil.
This approach is one of the main reasons why the project took so long, but it worked and left us with very little in the end.
Note: We also need to cover the finished box with poster board to prevent fog. Another important reason is that the paint is nice and dry. Rain paint would have stuck to that poster board and that word… was ruined.
The process is not difficult but it takes time. The actual act of spray painting the pattern is simple. It is all preparation and waiting for the healing project to come out. There will be days when we complete the cycle 3 or 4 times and other days we will do one cycle before going to bed and not touch it again for a week.

Then one day there was a fire under us. I’m not sure if it was worth the week of snow days we were given or just a general need to check this bad boy off our list, but we went to town and before we knew it, we had finished I can only describe the Feeling I felt the day I finally managed to tear up all the poster boards and tapes and throw them away like pure joy. I cleaned the floor, wiped off the paint mist that had settled, and bam:
We have funky funky floors that literally make the whole room have a different personality. Suddenly it all makes sense. Frustration is forgotten and all we can see is a happy place.
The floor feels fresh and easy to clean thanks to the catalyzed water-based paint, but when dirt gets in, it is invisible because the pattern helps to hide it. Functional and beautiful, does it get any better? Obviously space has a way to go, us
