If you are looking for a neutral color that can combine the warm colors of wooden furniture, oak cabinets and oak floors, it can be difficult to find the right neutral that is not too orange or too yellow. Gray can be too cool and beige can be too brown!
Fortunately, grayscale can help you mix old and new, warm and cool. Choosing the right gray color will help you find a middle ground between gray furniture and accessories and dark and brown wood.
We have used a variety of grays over the past few years on the exterior and interior of our homes. I love these shades on cabinets and vanities for the perfect warm neutral!
Best Home Decor Paint Colors: Sherwin Williams Comfort Gray
You’ll find a variety of our personal favorites photographed in our homes, as well as photos of these popular shades used elsewhere. It’s so helpful to see a good paint color on multiple surfaces so you can feel confident in your choice!
Affordable beige is the most popular gray color, and for good reason. It’s a beautiful neutral and can shine on a variety of surfaces – trim, cabinets, walls and exteriors.
SW 7036 has a low LVV (light value) of 58, which means it can make a room soft and comfortable. Very similar to SW Realist Beige!
SW 7029, Agreeable Grey, is probably the most popular gray on this list! With an LRV of 60, it shows the same amount of light in Realistic Beige and Accessible Beige.
The Best Taupe Paint Colors
In my opinion, it has more brown undertones than Accessible Beige. I can’t wait to try this somewhere – have you used it anywhere in your home?
SW 6078 has an LRV of just 58.83, making it a mid-tone color that can be surprisingly bright and airy, especially outdoors.
We used it for a little comparison with our Tudor colors a few years ago. It’s the perfect trim color to contrast with Everyday White, which you’ll also see in this gray!
With an LRV of 72, this is one of the lightest tones in this round. However, don’t skip this one because you’re afraid it’s too white! A truly perfect “middle” color!
Designer Approved Off White Color Paints To Try
It looks white in this photo when paired with SW Realist Beige trim, but it has very nice gray undertones and is very similar to Benjamin Moore Pale Oak.
If you’re using it on interior walls, pair it with a truer white for an extra pop, or consider using my favorite wall paint trick and trim the same color.
Classic Gray OC-23 is great! Although it can also be considered a white object, the undertones of this color are borrowed from the Greige family.
With an LRV of 74.78, this is the lightest and brightest paint color in this round. I want to use this to renovate our master bathroom – stay tuned!
Sherwin Williams: 6 Best Dark Greige & Taupe Paint Colours
SW 7015 is another popular option to consider if you’re looking for a medium gray tone. At just 58 LRV, it’s very similar to Realist Beige, which we used as our exterior color, above!
Consider it for outdoor projects or indoor rooms that get a lot of light – or even in your kitchen cabinets, as you can see below.
This is one of the most popular greige colors that has dominated the past decade. That’s because it’s tried and true and loved by many homeowners!
Revere Pewter’s LVV is only 55.1, making it the darkest paint color in this round. Keep that in mind when choosing patterns! Although this will provide the greatest contrast to the white trim color, it may be too dark in some rooms.
Top 10 Expert Recommended Gray Paint Colors, Plus How To Pick One
Benjamin Moore’s Pale Oak (OC-20) is a soft, light, neutral gray tone. In natural light, it is often read as white. Like Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige, accent colors and lighting in your room make a big difference!
Pale Oak has an LRV of less than 70 (69.89), making it lighter than SW Everyday White, which is also on the list. A very beautiful mushroom, very light gray tones – we painted our rooms this color. Also check out Benjamin Moore Natural Cream for another option on this list.
OC-27 is a creamy gray color with an LVV of 67.37. It’s the perfect gray tone for a variety of environments!
I like that this one reads like a true warm white, but offers a bit of contrast. It reminds me of Pale Oak, so be sure to compare the two in swatches!
Best Gray Paint Colors
Below, the brick is painted Balboa Mist and the trim is Sherwin Williams Intellectual Gray. Love those copper gutters too – what a combination!
This is another perennial favorite gray tone. People will often compare the suitability of Edgecomb Gray and Balboa Mist – I love them both!
Edgecomb Gray looks like a very yellow background to me when I compare them. Balboa Mist is just cool and very gray and light to the touch, but not too much!
Edgecomb is earthy and warm, with an LRV of 63.88. This makes it very similar to Agreeable Grey, which is the most popular gray color of all. Check them both out to see what works best for your home!
The Best Light Gray Paint Colors
I love this room below, with Edgecomb Gray on the trim and Cloud White on the walls. Perfect!
