The fireplace in our family room is a particularly ugly brick. When we first came in, it was unpainted red brick, and we hated it.

I wasn’t a big fan of the red-orange brick to begin with, but our fireplace was pretty bad because of the very sloppy mortar lines.

Suddenly I get a wild idea about my home. I used to brush them off, but one day I got brave and started doing them.

And these crazy ideas have turned into some of my favorite parts of my home. This spring I had the wild idea to paint my fireplace navy blue.

I really enjoyed the problems I faced because they taught me a lot about how to paint a brick fireplace the right way.

I started by painting the fireplace with chalk paint and it looked amazing. But I got confused and didn’t print right away.

And when my son drives his small cars over the fireplace, the paint scratches a little.

In an attempt to save some time (big mistake), I repainted it with satin latex paint in a color that perfectly matched the color of the chalk paint I used.

It’s hard to capture this in photos, but the photo below gives an idea. The bright half on the right is painted with satin paint.

The bright side does not appear. I don’t even know how to explain it, but all my attention was drawn to the real color on the white side.

Not the stove, but also the paint. The matte chalk paint part is about it and the shiny part is missing.

I know it sounds crazy, but there is a huge difference between the two. I don’t think it has anything to do with using latex paint over chalk paint.

The problem is the slight sheen of the satin paint. Brick has a very matte finish, so it makes sense that matte paint would look better on brick.

Lesson learned and in the future I will only use matte paint on the brick, even if I just paint with boring old white paint.

As mentioned above, I used chalk paint first. The color is gorgeous, it’s easy to work with and has a gorgeous matte finish.

The chalk paint I used is Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint. I mixed a custom dark blue color using legacy and relic colors.

This is generally the rule for anything you paint with chalk paint, whether it’s furniture or home decor or fabric.

It would be nice if no one touched the stove, but my son loves to play on the stove. In the absence of fire, of course! And his toy cars scratched the paint very quickly.

So if you choose to use chalk paint on your fireplace, I recommend a good sealer.

If I use chalk paint, I follow it with General Finishes Flat Out Flat Topcoat. This is my favorite full matte sealer.

Or you can save yourself some trouble and use matte latex paint and skip the need for sealant altogether.

Before you paint anything, it must be clean. Paint does not stick to dirt and grime, and especially fireplaces are covered with soot, ash and general dust.

I usually use a spray bottle filled with a mixture of water and dish soap for tasks like this, but any regular cleaning should work.

And if you have similar fireplace doors, you can also use masking tape to protect them while you paint the brick.

If your brick has not been painted before, you should definitely start with a primer coat.

If your brick has been previously painted and you know for sure that it was painted with a water-based paint, you can skip the primer.

If you have an older house and the brick has been painted for many years, there is a good chance that it was painted with an oil-based paint.

To test if your fireplace is painted with oil-based paint, you can put a little nail polish remover (with acetone) on a cloth and rub it over the paint. If nothing rubs, it is oil; If this is latex.

You can repaint with an oil-based paint or use an oil-based primer with a water-based paint such as latex paint.

In general, I prefer the second option. Water based paints are very durable these days and are also good for the environment and are very easy to work with and clean.

Because the brick is so rough, you need to push the paint into all the grooves.

Start with a brush to push the paint down into all the mortar lines between the bricks. Then go back with the brush and paint the faces of the bricks.

You can also use a roller instead of a brush for brick faces if you prefer. Personally, I find that it doesn’t really speed things up. When I tried to roll, I still had to go back over each brick with a brush to get the paint in all the little bits.

I like to remove the doors for aesthetic reasons, but they really make a big difference in helping regulate the temperature in our home.

So, for practical reasons, it must be. But at least I wanted to mix them up a bit more.

It’s a simple process: just glue the glass and surrounding brick together and spray the doors with high-heat spray paint.

The paint is very smoky, so make sure you wear a mask and do it when you can open the windows and get a lot of fresh air.

I’ve never seen a navy blue fireplace before, but I love mine. I’m so glad I didn’t mess up and stick with a certain color!
