Painting kitchen cabinets is one of the best ways to transform a kitchen from monochromatic to beautiful. After painting the cabinets, the second step will be the polishing process. Once the cabinets are completely dry and the paint has set, you can begin the glazing process.

How To Paint Your Cabinets In A Weekend (without Sanding Them)

Note that I can only recommend glazing on latex based paints as that is where I have the most experience. It should still work on oil-based paint, but not unsealed chalk paint.

Additionally, the glaze works best on an eggshell or satin finish. If you use a flat color, the glaze will not be easy to work with. It sticks to stains and is not good. If the color is too shiny, the glaze will slide too much.

Glazing technology is not just for kitchen cabinets either. It also appears as free-standing furniture in bathrooms.

I recommend this offer list. My affiliate link is included, but if you can find them at a local store, you can grab them there. I have a hard time finding frosting in stores without driving.

What Is Cabinet Glazing?

I think a slow dry time is the solution for most glaze projects. Thus, each individual can achieve the look they are looking for. If you like it or not, you can wipe it directly with a damp cloth. This means that when you finish the project, it will take a little longer to cure than a latex base paint.

It should definitely be done within 24 hours, but I always like to wait a week before I spray clean the cabinets, just to be safe.

It takes trial and error to get the technique down. Yes, mistakes will happen, but as I wrote above, they can be fixed with a damp cloth. I usually spend about 8 hours polishing an average kitchen. Start in the least visible place when you enter the room. It will be the place to get the technology you love. You can also play as an artist here. You can add as much frosting as you like for details.

As we know, not all toilets are created equal. Some are real wood and some are not. I wrote a post about glazing real wood cabinets vs. MDF that you should check out if you have oak cabinets. The tutorial on this page is how to create frosting. This post shows you the kitchen I painted as an example.

Should I Paint My Cabinets Two Different Colors?

Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground has been on my list of favorite cabinet colors for years! And with before and after photos like this one, it’s easy to see why, right?!

These honey colored oak cabinets were 25-30 years old. Homeowners were tired of their kitchens being boring and dated, so they were ready for a new look.

In addition to being outdated, the cabinet showed many signs of decay. The original wood strip finish around the counter has been completely removed. So the bare wood was soaked in oil, grease and water for many years.

I’m not sure who originally came up with the set of wood edging around the kitchen counters, but it was a great idea!

You can also see in the photo below where the original finish failed around the base cabinets near the floor. Decades of mopping the floor near the cabinet eventually exposed the bare wood.

Like many people lately, these homeowners have tried to update their outdated all-brown decor by adding gray tones from the early 2000s.

The underlying travertine slab had different tones of gray and brown throughout, so it was easy to incorporate gray and chalky colors.

We chose Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground for the cabinets and Sherwin Williams Intellectual Gray for the kitchen walls. And to really tie in with the dark gray floor colors, I mixed a custom dark charcoal glaze to make the striped cabinets.

I like to use General Finishes Glaze Effects for this application. I created the dark charcoal color by mixing black, Van Dyke Brown and some white paint.

The light switch cover was also ok…I didn’t ask, but I hope they will replace it soon.

Here’s a fantastic side-by-side before and after shot so you can see how we managed to build this kitchen. The owners of the house were very happy!
