Benjamin Moore Classic Gray In Sherwin Williams – In the world of white paint colors, Benjamin Moore Classic Gray (OC-23) is a soft gray that reads white in rooms where white paint colors don’t look right. It’s a light warm gray with subtle green undertones you’ll never see, and a purple flash in cool light. Sometimes it reads so warm that it is almost light brown, sometimes it is light warm brown.
This is the first in our “All About Paint Colors” series, where we share everything we learned about paint colors in the trenches.

Solid white has an LRV of 74.8, making it a very light gray or dull white. LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value and is a measure of light (LRV=100) or dark (LRV=0) color.
Use white instead if your room is too dark or if it’s too green outside. It’s a great solution to update an interior with an earthy Tuscan finish.
It’s a great color for any lighting – north, south, east or west. It is very light, it is usually white in color. It can glow light gray in dark north-facing rooms and is maintained at any time of day in east and west-facing rooms. It is a wonderfully soft white in south-facing rooms.
The challenge with contrasting white paint colors is that you need a lot of light to bring out the white. A dark room has a lot of shadows that make whites look dusty. Another challenge is to reflect all whites. A lawn, your neighbor’s paint color, roses, even an evergreen tree. Bright white reflects every color around it. Classic gray neutralizes all surrounding colors.

One more thing… We don’t recommend painting Classic Gray or any other Benjamin Moore paint similar to Sherwin-Williams, Behr, or any other manufacturer. Paint color formulas are difficult to replicate and white is especially difficult to correct. Read more about mixing paint.
Down stairs feature classic gray with a simple white trim. We love how it accentuates the beautiful copper Buddha statue. This color goes well with warm metals such as brass and nickel.
Pure whites like Chantilly Lace (BM OC-65), Oxford White (BM 869) and Extra White (SW 7006) look clean and fresh with classic grays. Off-whites such as Simply White (BM OC-117) and Cloud White (OC-130) also go well with this color. Avoid stark whites like White Dove or creamy colors like Swiss Coffee as there isn’t enough contrast and the combination looks like a mistake.
In the bathroom or in a room with a high ceiling, you can paint the walls in a classic gray color, as in the bedroom below. Painting this bedroom was challenging due to its easterly location and the green-blue houses across the street. Green trees in the summer make this room feel like a tree house, but white walls can make it look green. We tried SW Incredible White (favorite color) and it looked really pink. East-facing exposures are hard and Classic Gray makes them easy.

Classic gray is a great color for an all-white exterior and looks brighter than you’d expect.
This is one of our dirty little exterior color secrets. When choosing exterior colors, remember that sunlight makes paint colors 5 times lighter than interior colors. It looks 10 times brighter in our bright Colorado sun! We like to use this color as an exterior color because it doesn’t have a yellow tint like a cream color, which isn’t too bright to use with brick. It’s perfect! For an exterior paint, it can look just as good as white. We mentioned Classic gray below for an elegant interior. The homeowner (and painters) were skeptical, but it turned out beautiful!
Classic gray is a beautiful paint color that reads off white. Wear it everywhere, but team it with bright white Chantilly lace and solid white. As always, don’t forget to check your color palette! Read all about color testing here.

Benjamin Moore Classic Gray Paint Colour Review
Seriously, I can’t believe I haven’t done a review for this shade yet! Not only is this one of my favorite warm gray paint colors, it’s my reader’s favorite too! That is, two whacks with wet noodles.
Blue, purple or green love dangerous undertones – and classic gray is no exception. But the key to choosing a paint color you love is knowing what you’re dealing with before you knock on the walls, which is why you’re with me (you know I don’t look good…).
Classic Gray is an off-white, warm gray with soft, muted, slightly feminine undertones. If you don’t like blue or green, this might be for you!
So you should read it, but here’s the gist: LRV is how light or dark a color is based on a 0-100 scale, and each paint color has an LRV number. The closer the number is to 100, the lighter the color. The closer to 0, the darker the color. Done!
The Best Warm Gray Paint Colors
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s go back to classic gray. Classic Gray has an LRV of about 75, which in my crazy lil color world means no white. It’s probably closer to my magic LRV number, and it provides a soft, easy contrast to the white border, while still lighting up the room.
However, if you have a dark room, classic gray can be quite dark and flat.
