Sherwin Williams Charcoal Blue Exterior Paint – Sherwin Williams Caviar is one of our top picks for 2022. exterior house colors and for good reason. This almost black shade is full of drama. It’s sophisticated and luxurious, but not for the faint of heart. Join us as we delve into the properties of caviar, how it’s used by our designers, and alternative colors to compare with.
All paint colors look different depending on the environment, and this is especially true when used outdoors. This is why the house designs in this post are slightly darker or lighter than each other, even though they are all represented by caviar. Our best-in-class virtual exterior designers take your home’s setting, orientation and other factors into account when creating your exterior design.
Sherwin Williams Charcoal Blue Exterior Paint
With the LRV 3, Kavia is black, black, black. (Learn more about LRV and what it means for your exterior color here.) It’s a fairly even mix of red, green, and blue — also known as RGB in the color world — with values of R: 49, G: 48 , B: 49. Because of this caviar and other similar blacks and near-blacks can actually work as neutrals in an exterior color palette.
Our Review Of Sherwin Williams’ Caviar
It doesn’t have strong hues, even if it can be a bit brown depending on the materials it’s paired with. That’s why we always recommend trying before choosing a color!
Brick&batten homes (and commercial spaces!) that are modern in style tend to use black exterior paint. Caviar is perfect for all home styles; however, it will give a traditional home a more modern feel.
Our designers used caviar as a garden color for siding and plaster. Looks great on vertical panels, modern panel systems, horizontal cladding and more.
Caviar’s sophisticated feel is enhanced when used on the exterior, which also features dark-stained wood and stone trim. Concrete landscapes and bluestone also look stunning with caviar houses!
Charcoal Blue (2739)
Above, we’ve paired Caviar with Benjamin Moore’s Olympic Bracket in Brick Accent for a great transitional style.
Based on the design below, our team created this contemporary home with caviar on the plaster and trim, black Tricorn on the eaves and soffit, and Romabio stone powder silver trim. It is preferred to use caviar in combination with other black and almost black colors.
It’s a smart idea to compare your preferred exterior color options with similar shades. Here are some things to keep in mind when considering Kavia:
With the same LRV 3, Tricorn Black is caviar black, and as mentioned above, we sometimes use these two colors together. Tricorn Black has just a bit more blue in the RGB mix. However, they are easier to work with than caviar because they rarely brown.

Black Magic is another dark Sherwin Williams that offers us a love of the outdoors. His LRV is also 3. Sometimes the red in his mix can be a bit stronger than Kavia or Tricorn Black. But again, it depends on your environment. It’s a good idea to try all three of these paint colors side by side!
Ultimately, Inkwell is a good choice for homeowners who want something lighter than caviar. Inkwell’s LRV is 4. It also has a noticeable blue cast, making it appear more gray than black.
The use of Sherwin Williams caviar on the exterior of the building is a bright and eye-catching choice. This rich shade isn’t for everyone, but we love it when our customers commit to being bold and rich. Some of our favorite recent home designs feature deep, rich colors like this one.

When our customers ask for a pure white that doesn’t get hot, the choice is simple – we offer Snowbound by Sherwin-Williams. We love this cool white tone, which works well with accents like the navy blue door and contrasts well with warm tones like the clay tile roof.
One of the many reasons we love Sherwin-Williams is that they readily list the Color Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of each color on the back of the deck and on their website. Snowbound has an LRV of 83, so it reflects slightly less light than other whites. However, this is great for homes in extremely sunny environments, as some colors with an LRV closer to 100 can look too dazzling during the day.
If you love the simplicity of white but want a color that’s far from pure, Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray is a great choice. This eye-catching gray is light enough to be almost white and is warmer than most grays. We love how this color looks a little gray on rainy and snowy days. But when the sun shines or the leaves change, it looks a little whiter. Overall, we love a good, versatile color like Repose Grey.
Black Exteriors 12 Favorite Black Paints And Ours!
Sherwin-Williams Urbane Bronze is a gorgeous color, if we do say so ourselves. It’s not just gray, it’s a neutral two-in-one that combines gray and brown. Again, we’re fans of the variety of colors and love how Urbane Bronze sometimes looks charcoal and sometimes even black, depending on the day. Urbane Bronze looks great in homes with natural wood accents such as cedar paneling or walnut doors.
We thought we’d include a small palette of complementary colors featuring two of Sherwin-Williams’ top rated exterior paint colors. Shoji White takes its place on our list of favorite Sherwin-Williams colors because it’s the perfect warm combination of beige and gray. But Urbane Bronze takes it to the next level. If you are lucky enough to have a house with dark black doors, these two colors will bring out that advantage. The warm tones of Shoji White and Urban Bronze go harmoniously together.
Affordable Beige is a universally pleasing home exterior color, making it an especially great choice if you’re preparing your home for sale. This earthy tone looks great in all types of homes, but we really like how it looks on brick. Maybe warm tones that slightly enhance the original color of the brick is what works for us. Affordable beige looks great with charcoal or brown trim, depending on the home.
Like white, it’s very easy to go too hard on black. For this reason, we often recommend Sherwin-Williams Black Fox if you want to go dark. In fact, you can classify this black as gray. It is in the same color family as Repose Grey, but darker. This color makes a great neutral accent set, like red porch curtains or a yellow door. We also love Black Fox for the front door color.
Home Exterior Paint Color Palette Sherwin Williams Blue
Sherwin-Williams alabaster looks creamy and warm, not dry and clean. This white has an LRV of 82, making it very similar to Snowbound in terms of light reflection. But unlike Snowbound, Alabaster definitely has warm tones. Pair alabaster with dusty blue doors and gray paneling for a touch of European cottage charm.

It’s 2016, and outdoor paint is saturating the suburbs, one house at a time.
This noble-looking house is actually painted three shades of dark gray. Windows from Victorian-style residences – and happy homeowners: this house has a garage!
A charcoal master and a whimsical mid-century master steal the show, leaving their beige brick neighbors to gather dust in their elegant hues. These moody pigments create amazing appeal and an exterior that is sure to break necks. (Figuratively speaking, of course.)
