Having said that, you really can’t go wrong with Sherwin Williams or Ben Moore. In terms of pure paint quality, they are almost equal. Thus, both have bad, better, and high quality finish lines that are priced differently.
In general, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin paints are in a class of their own. Especially compared to Behr, Valspar or PPG paints.
Among professional artists, it’s like comparing Coca-Cola to Pepsi. Some people just prefer the taste of Pepsi to Coke or vice versa. Both paint brands produce high-quality paint, but some painters swear by one or the other.
Benjamin Moore Equivalent To Sherwin Williams
But Benjamin Moore has one major weakness compared to Sherwin-Williams paint. Before we dive into that, let’s talk about the price difference between Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams paint.
Benjamin Moore is slightly more expensive than Sherwin Williams house paint when comparing similar products. As mentioned earlier, both companies have different indoor and outdoor paint lines, such as Cashmere, Emerald or Duration. Overall, Sherwin Williams paint averages $53 a gallon compared to Benjamin Moore’s $57.
Sherwin-Williams also has Superpaint, which experts consider the best balance of price and quality of all paints. For reference, Superpaint retails for about $48 per gallon to consumers. It’s about $30 less than Sherwin’s high-end Emerald line.
In general, higher quality paint often costs money, but only to a certain extent. Personally, I’m not a big fan of high-end paints like Sherwin’s Emerald or Benjamin Moore’s Aura. Both of the higher quality premium paint lines are quite expensive at around $70 per gallon.

That’s because Benjamin Moore distributes its paint through independent retailers like Ace Hardware and JCLicht Hardware Store. Even if there is a Benjamin Moore paint store near you, I have noticed that different independent retailers carry different product lines. For example, you may not find certain flat white ceiling paint lines that JCLicht carries at Ace Hardware.

This alone can be the deciding factor when choosing between Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore. As a painting contractor, I would choose Sherwin if I had to drive more than 15 minutes to a Benjamin Moore store over a Sherwin store. It’s really close when comparing the two paint marks.
Whether you’re an artist or a home owner, the proximity of a paint shop is something to consider. When buying paint for any painting job, you probably have to stop at a store, by the gallon or otherwise. There’s no doubt you’ll thank yourself for choosing a shop nearby when you compare old paint.

In addition, Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore share formulas so they can match each other’s colors when needed. However, I recommend keeping the color selection and retail the same whenever possible to reduce the risk of color mismatch.
Paint gloss refers to how shiny or glossy the paint looks after it dries. The gloss of the paint you choose is in many ways as important as the color. This is where things can get complicated when comparing Sherwin Williams to Benjamin Moore. Each paint manufacturer has different names for their glazes. It is complicated by the fact that some individual paint lines have their own special gloss rating.
You can make it easier to choose a gloss by contacting a local paint store and asking for recommendations. For interiors, we recommend flat roofs; matte or eggshell for walls; and satin or semi-gloss for finishing. For the outside, we recommend a smooth or satin coating for the siding; and semi-gloss or gloss for trim, doors and windows.

Benjamin Moore’s best paint is Regal Select. In fact, over 50% of professional painters choose Regal Select as their preferred interior wall paint. It’s a high quality 100% acrylic latex paint that just checks all the boxes. That’s why you can’t beat Regal for coverage, thickness and ease of application. It is also known for its durability and purity.
Like most wall paints, it requires two coats, but its color pigment retention is better than other similar paints. Regal has a higher price tag of $50-$60 per gallon, but in most cases it’s worth every penny. However, Regal performs better and is $10 to $20 per gallon cheaper than Sherwin’s equivalent Kashmere line. Benjamin Moore’s Regal is also a better paint than Sherwin’s Superpaint, but Regal costs $10-$20 more per gallon.
Likewise, Regal Select is a quiet house paint that resists mold. This enables safer use of the interior during and after painting and reduces paint fumes.
If you’re looking for a subdued or muted interior wall paint, consider Benjamin Moore’s Aura paint line. It’s a step up from the Regal Select, making the Aura $15 to $25 more expensive, but it’s a thicker paint that covers colors better.

Last but not least, both Aura and Regal Select are made with Benjamin Moore’s Gennex Color technology, which allows both paints to retain brighter colors that last longer. This innovative technology also reduces VOCs in both Regal Select and Aura paints.
You can think of Ben B. as the younger sibling of Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select. As you can imagine, Ben is $20 per gallon cheaper than Regal Select. However, it performs better than other entry-level Sherwin Williams interior paints such as A-100.
The main difference is that Regal Select offers better coverage and thickness than Ben. This is due to the higher amount of solids in the composition of the paint. Also, Ben’s drying time is 2 hours vs. Regal’s 1 hour.
Next, the Regal Select has more different finishes than the Ben. In fact, the Ben only comes in smooth, eggshell and semi-gloss, while the Regal includes all three, along with matte and pearlescent finishes.

But here’s a little-known interior paint by Benjamin Moore about Ben. Not only does it recharge itself, but Ben’s eggshell and flat glitters are close to zero VOC. That’s why we still love using Benjamin Moore Ben for interior painting projects. Plus, Ben costs nearly $30 less than Sherwin Williams’ zero-VOC Harmony brand.
