A good area rug should not only be decorative – it should also help create a focal point in your living room. Placing a rug in the right place can change the look and feel of your entire room.

“A rug is often the statement piece that ties together all the other elements in a room,” says interior designer Kimberly Gorsline of Kimberly Marie Interiors. “It helps that the furniture structures are grounded while still providing visual and manual texture.” Making the most of your area rug depends on choosing the right size for your living room, which ultimately depends on how big your space is and where you want to place your furniture.

Although sizes vary greatly depending on the type of loom and where in the world the rug is woven, Keith Miller of Miller Interior Design says there are several standardized rug sizes to choose from.
Interior designer Liz McPhail says to try making one of these sizes work in your space (instead of going for a custom iteration) because they’re easy to use. “Don’t be afraid to take out your blue masking tape and draw standard rug-sized corners of your room to see what works best,” she says.
For living rooms, you may want to stick to larger structures. “Usually 9 by 12 feet or 8 by 10 feet, unless you have a small or large room or an odd room that needs more than just a rug,” says McPhail.
Do not choose a tile size that is too large for your walls. “Unless you’re trying to hide an unwanted floor condition, you want to leave space between the top of the carpet and the walls,” says McPhail. “We always put rugs on hardwood floors or tiles that we like—we just want to define a space, add warmth and comfort, and provide sound deadening.”

He recommends leaving about 6 inches or more of space between the wall and the carpet—anything closer than 4 to 5 inches will feel a little tight.
When choosing the right size rug, Billy Ceglia of Billy Ceglia Design says the rug should be large enough to allow all the furniture in the area to rest their front legs on the rug. As a rule of thumb, McPhail says to leave at least 3 inches of carpet behind the front legs of the furniture.
MacPhail suggests choosing a rug that’s big enough to avoid holding up all the furniture if you measure it by 3 inches. “You need at least 12 inches between the couch and the coffee table and chairs on the other side, so there’s plenty of room to move,” she says.
While there’s no right or wrong way to place a rug in a living room, Gorsline says it’s usually a safe bet to place the sofa on top of it. “As the anchor of the room, if the rug is off-center, it tends to push everything else too far,” she says.

However, depending on the size of the room and the style of the sofa, Gorsline says the sofa doesn’t have to sit completely on top of the rug. “In the example of a large sectional, the sectional should be more in line with the corner of the rug—leaving a little margin if possible—rather than the center,” he says.
You should always choose a rug size that’s large enough to sit under your outdoor furniture pieces, says Kerrie Kelly, creative director of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab. “You want the rug to act as a grounding piece, so make sure you don’t go too small so it doesn’t look like a postage stamp in the middle of your room,” she says.
Ceglia confirms this sentiment, noting that when you’re torn between two different sizes, bigger is always better. “A carpet that is too small is worse than no carpet at all,” he said. “A larger carpet makes the room appear more spacious and allows furniture to be placed more easily and functionally.”
Bruce Fox of Bruce Fox Design says that if you have a large home, you can use different rugs to create different areas in the room. “Each seat can have its own rug, or you can use one large center rug in the room with smaller accent rugs,” she says.

Some people think about styles or designs, while others start with a budget in mind. While this is important to consider, we recommend that you start by determining the size of the rug you need. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the most popular rug sizes, how to choose them, and the best way to display them in your home.
While the rules are slightly different for individual rooms (see our room guide for details), there are some general rules that apply to your home. First, you should buy a rug that fills as much free space as possible, leaving an 18-20 inch border around the perimeter.
Don’t just keep the carpet in the room. Instead, think about how your furniture is arranged. For example, the bed should be placed according to your position, and the bed is often placed under the bed. Before you buy, you can make sure you get the right size by marking where the carpet will be placed with a piece of masking tape or masking tape.

Small children may not fill the room, but they are still different. 2′ x 3′ is best used in small rooms or areas where the functionality of the rug is more important than its visual impact. Hallways, bathrooms, kitchens and even closets can benefit from a small area rug.
The medium size is perfect for small living rooms, offices, or under a queen bed. In general, it is recommended to arrange the furniture so that all the legs are on the carpet or at least the front legs. For a very small rug, this arrangement may seem cramped, but placing furniture further apart can make your rug a seal of approval in the middle of the room. The best way to avoid all of this is to place your smaller rug over a large, inexpensive natural fiber rug. This way you can take your pattern rug skills and still fill in the gaps without breaking the bank.
8′ x 10′ is one of the most popular sizes in the area. They are perfect for filling small to medium sized living rooms and under most kitchen counters.
They can even be placed completely under a queen bed with room for sleepers on both sides.

Large, 9″ x 12″ and larger, works well in living rooms and formal dining rooms with large tables. At this size, it is easier to place your furniture around the carpet creating a border around it.
The effect is especially noticeable in open floor plans, where a large rug creates a visually distinct space without the need for walls.
Although runners are often thought of as runners, they are much more than that. Runners are perfect for any awkward space in your home that could use some comfort. In the kitchen, they can be placed next to the counters for a little cushioning while you work. Similarly, runners can work in large bathrooms
