Hello Friend! Thank you so much for the great love at our backstage show. The response has been overwhelming and we are really enjoying our new place…well we were before this crazy crazy heat wave hit our area and the temperature has been over 106 for a few weeks now. It gets unbearable there. Of course, I can’t wait for it to pass so we can spend more time outdoors. As hot as it has been lately, we started feeling the heat before the outdoor space was completed during one of the biggest projects of the entire renovation: the trolley. Luckily I was able to do it before the real stingers got here. Today I’m sharing the process of how I tackled that project.

The biggest goal I want for our outdoor space is to make it feel like an extension of our home. I wanted to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor and I knew that the tire stain would be a big part of contributing to the end result. As beautiful as natural pine is, I really don’t want it to look like a regular wood deck. I love the warmth of the wood floor color inside our home and hope to replicate it outside.

How I Stained Our Deck With Sherwin Williams

Because we use redwood, we have to wait several months after we build it before we can stain or coat it. This allows the wood and oil to dry properly so it takes the stain better and gives the best color. The house was finished in February and allowed to dry for 5 months before I painted it in July. If you’re working with a wood like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long (if at all) before staining. Once I came up with a game plan for how to tackle the project, I ordered a pickup truck from Sherwin-Williams for stains and materials.

I used a series of brushes, rollers, metal washers, pumps and Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Cleaner and Stain Remover to complete the project.

As with any project, a good result starts with a clean and well-prepared surface. I start by removing everything from the deck and get to it. Then I give it a good scrubbing. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and disinfect the deck. This technique is used on new or untreated cedar, redwood or pressure treated wood.

I had a little help with this part of the project as you have to be careful not to let the product dry on the wood during application. Naomi and I work on small areas that get rain in the area and we use Superdeck Revive with a sprayer.

After application, use a poly brush to brush the area. Then let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse with a hose on a high pressure setting.

Once we got going, it went very quickly. After the entire deck is cleaned, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the tree looks new and renewed and revived…. Like it’s new again!

With the deck washed and ready for painting, I did one more pass with the broom, pushing it against the side of the housing where the deck meets it to protect the exterior paint.

Now it’s time to get dirty. I chose Superdeck Exterior Waterborne Formula in a semi-solid color. When choosing a deck stain, you should consider maintenance and how often it may need to be repainted. The best rule of thumb is the darker, or more transparent, the less frequent treatment. Clear coats and clear stains require more frequent maintenance and reapplication, where semi-hard or solid stains may take a long time before needing to be reapplied. Superdeck is great because you can even apply it to wet wood.

Stain Color Hawthorne

Superdeck decks come in several color options and I chose the maroon SW 3524 color. I wanted a deep rich brown and this color was perfect when I swatched a few months ago. I spend more time looking at a smaller area to eat

Now listen guys…. Your daughter is afraid to take the first brush stroke. Which super happened. We saved a lot of time building the deck and the last thing I want to do is ruin it. This was a project that really challenged me to trust my vision and trust the process. I start by rolling the dirt with a short sun roller and then use a 6 inch deck brush to push the brush back over it to even it out. Always use with the direction of the grain.

There is a bit of a learning curve when working with the stain as it is unlike any other stain I have used before. You paint as you apply it and simply roll/brush on the product without wiping the paint off after letting it sit on the wood for a few minutes. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but once I did it was smooth sailing. I was still working against the heat so I had to move very quickly. After the first day I realized I wanted to color with just one brush so I got out some other craft brushes (Purdy is my favorite!) and used them throughout the work.

Every time I get a crazy idea to mess with the deck again, please save me from myself! When I tell you this takes forever!!! I didn’t realize how big the tire was until I had the stain. Shipped by hand. It was huge and took longer than I expected due to its size. Plus I can only work with it for a short while early in the morning and later in the evening when it’s below 90 degrees outside. I would recommend taking on a tire painting project in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or cold…just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. And don’t even get me started on brushing in between. Just farmhouse

Superdeck® Puts Technology To Work

It took a few days, but I finally finished the first layer. I really want to take my time so I can get a better result. Slowly, I could see the vision starting to come together.

The good thing about the Superdeck stain in the water formula is that it allows for quick drying and overcoating time. You can only apply additional coats after 4 hours, and with a semi-finished finish you’ll want to use two thin coats for better results. Depending on the size of your project, this product will allow you to complete it in a day! After finishing the second coat, I let it dry overnight before putting everything back on the deck.

After about 48 hours I did a water test to see how well the stain would hold up to moisture and was surprised to see the water immediately bead and roll off.

I think a lot of people were surprised when I mentioned that I was going to stain the deck because redwood is used for construction and often people leave redwood decks in their natural state. It is a fantastic quality wood with all kinds of decay and nature/element resistant properties. If it is not taken care of or neglected, it becomes hot overtime. Honestly, it’s pretty cool, but I knew I’d be wrong when we first wrote it. I am very happy with the end result. It looks beautiful and makes the place feel like a holiday destination.

All About Exterior Stain

If you are planning on taking on a deck staining project, I definitely recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products. They also come in an oil based formula, which I might try next time I want to paint a deck. I’m one of those weirdos who really enjoys working with oil based products because I love that it gives you more control during application. It dries slower than a feather stain, (which can be a negative for many) but it also gives you a bit more freedom of movement if you want to take your time and get the material right.

You can also find tons of information on how to stain a deck and help with other projects, including how to resist painting.
